First Internet Experience

Creating my own MSN chat room with Rap Music.

Enjoying the hammer beside my name and the begging public wanting a place of power.

1990 - builtin boards.. I think it was SoundTracker tunes..

1992 when I started uni.. there was Gopher.. and Mosaic on the SUN workstations. I'm not sure tbh.. think it was course work but there wasn't much of a search engine at that time.. only later did Altavista appear.

I was very late to wasting ti... chatting on the net. I spent my first 3 years on the net playing red alert online :p

That would be way back in 1997. Got into secondary school, and they had internet access via a network of elderly Win3.11 486 machines  (The main network ran Win95, but for reasons I cannot fathom, there was no net access there, only for the Win3.11 machines)
The first site I really found would have been CroTrainz (Sadly gone now), and the wonders of Mechanik. From there, things moved onwards- I have been an active part of the BVE community from its inception, never one of the major players, but my little project has moved on.

Anway, only hardcore trainsimmers need understand that little lot :D

It was when I was a student, in a cyber café in Lansdowne in Bournemouth... back in '94 I think it was. First websites were chat sites and some guitar sites, very very basic with no graphics, just text on a grey background. Think one of the sites was called Mattchat.com named after the bloke who built the site.

The techie guy at the cyber café was trying to set up IRC at the same time so I helped out getting that working too. Was a good laugh. Been hooked ever since, and still use IRC now too.

I remember looking for topless pics of the spice girls in 94! Got some of Geri I remember -took ages on 14.4! :o :o

Freeserve 56k for me to, well at home anyways. Used to spend a lot of time playing planetarion, 1st time I played it was the 2nd round, on 22 now or something, used to spend SO long doing that....

Think I may get back into it actually lol.

oh and of couse, getting pr0n. I remember selling 6 floppy disks worth of porn to my mate for £10 haha.

Does having HQ sending CAD drawings to a teleprinter in 1987 count? They were both requested and sent completely electronically!

Actually a good thread from Sam  *amazed* , erm the first time I went online christ that's a while ago I believe the first website or one of my first websites was Lycos or Excite search. It's that long ago (around 1999) I can barely remember, but I too played a lot of neopets around 1999-2000 :D

It must have been around 12 years ago, so I don't remember much. I know we had a 14.4k modem and we had a choice between the first version of AOL in the UK and Compuserve. Neopets does ring a bell, but I don't know how much I played it.

thinky my very first internet visit was looking for cheats for playstation 1 games in about 99/00.

The first thing I did when we got the internet at home was to download, install and play an MMORPG called 'The Myth of Soma' almsot constantly for a year or two.

...Oh, and porn, lots of porn.

1996 remember it well, first site we visited on our Zetnet ISP (some scottish firm) was ID software then CNN.com i think. Logged off after that and just emailed for the first few days.

ah yeah, that was one of the main thing I did online too lol. cheatcodecenteral.com used to be awesome. I used to sell cheats too, I made quiet a bit of money haha.

Woaaaaah... must've been 95 or 96, not sure. Think we started off on 33.6 kbps but upgraded to 56kbps within a year or two. I prowled Usenet a lot, still to this day laugh whenever someone mentions whether Balrogs have wings, which was one of the recurring flamewars on rec.books.tolkien which flared up again every 3 weeks or so!:D I was into Warhammer back then so I also spent a lot of time reading and ranting on the Direwolf mailing list. Oh, and porn of course, again from Usenet which meant you had to download each file in multiple parts and put it together manually with a text editor! :p

Didn't get into online gaming until my ISP decided to start hosting a Quake 2 server - it was the only place to get a lag-free game in Cyprus!
