First Internet Experience

paid 49.95 usd for a download of Doom 2 from AOL on dialup @ 48kbps

I think that was the last I used of the internet until Starcraft came out.

My first internet was xstream...

it was 0800 on weekends so it was quality!! i used to get up at 6am and set it to redial til it connects.. took about 3 or 4hrs to get through. then disconnected me every 2hrs...

not sure what i did on the internet.. chat rooms mainly, i was only 13/14.

i had a 56k external modem but only ever got about 1.5 or 2k a second downloads and it never connected at anything higher than 33k... i never had v92 or whatever it was.

that was when the internet was a special time. i was never allowed on through the weeknights because it was 1p a min after 6pm, so i got about 30mins a night

92' 14k modem on a 486 laptop via AOL.

Had to install AOL plugin browser to go on the web. Using webcrawler search engine I remember going to NASA website and downloading images. Took about 5 hours :o

Force9 dial up. Used to be super fast back in the day. We got ADSL really, really early aswell - I remember my dad paying something like £200/month for a 512kb/sec business line.

Yea i remember those days when we had to pay for it by min, was indeed special and you had to make use of the time wisely :) Most i ever saw on dialup was about 48k too and at best 7k on a good day.

1997 was the year for me. I started to date this girl in that year and her brothers both has PC's. I had a blast on some games and was hooked. Went and bought a Packard bell desktop PC from popular highstreet retailer for £800 a few days later.

I used the PC for games then one day I notcied the pre-installed AOL icon on the desktop. I clicked it and nothing happened. It kept failing to connect to AOL. I rang up Packard bell.

They said I needed a modem.:o

Come on it was my first PC.

Went into town to buy a modem. Got myself a 56k one. Fastest there was apparently.:)

Plugged it in and loaded up AOL. I was then greeted with the AOL browser and all the other stuff. First thing I entered into the search bar was "sex".

"AWSOME" I said to myself. Naked ladies everywhere. 2 months later my gran got the phone bill:eek:. Well like I said, how was I to know. I didnt know I had to pay for the calls aswell as the online charges. Yes I know I should have read the t&c.

Anyway. I sorted it all out with my gran for future bills. Then one day my mate come over and said, "you need to leave AOL and go onto Demon" so I did just that. Canceled AOL and called up Demon. Got my Password and username sorted entered it into the dialer, modem started to talk and that was it. Nothing. Zilche. Zero.

Where was the browser and the chat rooms etc?. I called Demon and they said its not like AOL. I had to use IE. "Click that little blue icon on your desktop". I did and up popped Lycos. "WoW" I said to myself. I typed in "sex" again and I was gobsmaked. AOL must have censored out LOADS.

I subscribed to some porn site for £29 a month downloaded all the pictures and movies all at an alarmingly slow rate.

I was on AOL for a good 4-5 months.
Demon for a year or so.
Redhotant for well over a year (free access 0800).
NTL at my previous house and now NTL here (20mb for £0 per month)

The rest they say is History

Windows 3.1 386 was my first system. I blew up the power supply by flicking the voltage regulator switch on the back of it. I went out and bought a power supply and a local shop. I then had it upgraded to add 8mb extra memory and a math co-processor to allow windows 95 and then an external 36k modem. Them where the days.

First "online" experience was with BBS's back in the very early 90's, with a 9600 baud modem

Then got compuserve and a 14.4k modem, I thought it was blistering, and I though that WINCIM was fantastic... lol, how naive.

It was with Compuserve. Used to have hugeeeeee phone bills until Telewest came long with their cheap cableinet service.

I started around 1995 with a 14k or 9600 modem doing dialups to BBS's and then later Compuserve/Usenet and Wireplay gaming.

I remember some C64 BBS and irc as early as that and learning my first programming language (BASIC).

Hmm... Must be 96 or so connecting via a shared 56.6k connection, painfully slow. Think the first thing I did was sign up for a hotmail account.

Didn't get internet access at home until about 97/98 via a 33.6K modem, took ages to do anything, god bless broadband!

Freeserve 56k was our start, absolutly smashing stuff, I don't really remember what I got up to though.

Neopets was one for sure.

Compuserve addresses! Back in about 1995 I was [email protected]. My favourite online activities were looking at Mega Drive screenshots and browsing CompuServe forums on my 9.6kbaud modem.

I remember when I downloaded Sega Rally - it was 8MB and I felt leet :D
