First Internet Experience

online porn existed in 1993??

As soon as the internet was invented there was porn on it. Heck, the internet was invented for porn.

95% of the internet IS porn.

As an aside this did remind me of this, the third real result on Google for 'first lady of the internet' is a page that links to: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~chuck/lennapg/

I'm sure slashdot had an interview with her or something. Or she was digitally transferred accross the atlantic in record breaking speeds or something.

I got in the internet properly in about 95 with a 14.4K .

When Quake came out in 96 I had a great time playing that against friends by dialling into their houses and taking it in turns to host the server cos the Server player had a zero ping and the one diallying in had about 200 ping. I'd win and my mate would photoshop the screenie, print it out and 'own' me on the school bus the next day... ahhhh those times..

Before that I was dialing up a BBS and playing multiplayer 4 player Doom (or was it DoomII) - man that was fun! And expensive :(

Before that I was using some BBS systems with a 2400 baud and an Atari ST to get Public Domain software.

It was in the newsgroups because I don't think there were proper pictures on the net in 93.
The pictures were encoded into a format called UUE.
You had to cut and paste the code (sometimes multiple pages) into Notepad, save out the text and decode it just for one picture.

1995, compuserve on a 14.4k modem

Does anyone remember those 'OMG Try AOL 3/4/5 NOW!!!11!!' disks?

I must have got about 200+ of those things free, cleared out about 60 from my life archives the other day. :D

Yeah we had blooming millions of them through the post.

I once saw my Mum's credit card bill and wondered why AOL had charged us £9.99 the month before despite us having cancelled our account well before that.

Shortly after quake came out, I must admit I didn't use the internet for anything other than quake, quake forums, or quake irc for about 3 years.

Then I left uni and became **** at games :(

I first got the net in '97 and remember:

Looking for funny GIFs (had 2 floppys full of em!)
downloading MIDI files
Loooking for tomb raider 2 and GTA cheats
downloading songs off napster (took 30 mins on 28k)
going on freeserve chat
playing red alert 2 online and meeting up with mates from school for a group chat on MSN!!

Can't remember my first but a few words come to mind that sum up my first internet impressions:

Worlds Away
a/s/l
Jurassic Park website
Pamela Anderson
Quake lagging
