Hi guys,

I recently bought myself a light stand and an umbrella to try some off camera portraits. Any chance you could give me some pointers? I took a lot of shots and moved the umbrella around until I got the least amount of shadows which seemed to work - luckily my girlfriend is quite patient :)

I think aperture would be my main criticism if they were shots I'd taken myself, rather than the lighting work.

2145 & 2161 for example have quite busy backgrounds, which really distracts from the subject, the one with the geese in particular.

It looks like you are shooting in the wide-standard range, which will obviously be harder to get subject isolation, in which case I'd look to find very plain backgrounds to shoot against so there is less distraction to the viewer.

Otherwise, I'd look at something in the telephoto end which is going to give great subject isolation and be very flattering.

have you done specific pp work on the eyes? I can't seem to look away from them in any of the colour photos, they seem almost unreal.
