First OS

The oem is on the old pc

and you could download it with a trial microsoft OS installed so its not a case of needing a liscence

What version are you trying to install, just becuase you can download it, doesn't mean that's what it's designed for.

Tell us what version you are trying to install.

Iif it is this one
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store...o-Upgrade---Student-Offer/productID.272002100

Then youa re meant to have XP sp3, vista or win7 installed on the machine with a valid license and the upgrade will be simple.

If that's the one and you don't have one of those is talked then that version is not for you and hence you are struggling, nothing to do with MS making it difficult, everything to do with you not having a valid license.

Yes

also "Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows 8 Release Preview"

You need to install one of them.
It's not just the student version.
It's an upgrade you need to upgrade something, it's not MS being difficult, your trying to do something it's not meant to do.
An upgrade license upgrade you XP/vista/w7 license to a w8 license.
And for students you can use preview which I didnt know about.

You can download the preview from any computer with any os on it. Although I doubt there's a direct MS link for it anymore, loads of places will stil have it hosted. Don't download 8.1 as iirc that won't work.

Or you can google one of the work around a or do what someone has allready said.

If you are at Uni you could join Dreamspark. You would get a lot of MS software free.

This is a good idea, even if you do not have premium, normally you can get a copy of Windows server 2008 onwards from dreamspark for free. Plenty of blogs detailing how to ghetto pimp it into pretty much windows 7.

Which uni you at and why is it so bad out of curiosity?

I wont say which one, but they only email things out to us, never say in person and the emails along with the whole IT system is terrible, you can not get an email for weeks you can be unable to log in to ANY computer for days, you can upload stuff, go back to the page see its uploaded get a confirm email days later and you lecturer still cant see the document on the their end.

We are also required to do so much irrelevant rubbish, like I have to learn the mathematics used for computer programming - nothing to do with our course at all! Maybe the goons that run our systems should do it instead.

Sounds gash, I'm suprised as a student sounding like you do computer science that the uni hasn't ponied up for dreamspark premium, at my uni they paid for all science students to have it, which is awesome.
