I'd never overclocked before but I was advised to do so as i was told my CPU was a good chip for OC'ing and that my AC Freezer Pro was good enough for a semi decent OC.

After reading the sticky and whatnot I set about upping my FSB and ended up settling on 400x9 for 3.6ghz OC. I didn't go higher since my RAM is only rated to 800mhz and so reducing the System Memory Multiplier to its lowest setting of 2.00B (i have no idea what the A/B/C/D bits actually mean/do) my RAM was kept at its rated speed and gave a 1:1 FSB:DRAM ratio. I upped the RAM voltage to 2.0 since the sticky said it should actually be as high 2.2 and not its rated voltage of 1.8.

Everything went super and I ran prime95 in Small FFT and Blend a bunch of times for 1hr+ with no errors or bad results all on a stock vcore of 1.2500. The problems arose when i got a bit ahead of my self.

Since my temps were staying below 50c i decided to up things further. To cut a long story short i upped the FSB to 445, I upped the vcore up a not 1.2600 and the RAM vcore to 2.1. The end result being the computer failing to post and the dual bios thing kicking in to return me its original safe levels. I'm now back at my original settings of 400x9 etc.

I'm almost certain that the failing to post was due to the ram voltage since i have since found out that my CPU vcore actually sits at about 1.3 when left in AUTO (i forgot to manually set it after all BIOS settings were reset) which is obviously higher than the 1.2600 i set it to when it failed to post. Having now set it manually to 1.2500 it seems to idling at 1.1 (ish) so its now undervolting instead of overvolting to 1.3

My main question is basically where do i go from here?

Should i just be happy with 3.6ghz since my RAM seems to be temperamental?

What should my vcore actually be since it seems to idle on 1.3 when left in AUTO.

What should my System Memory Multiplier be? 2.00 A,B,C,D? And what do they mean/affect?

Is there anything else i should look into?

Many thanks.

:/

seeming as your ram is being a bit funny im saying your gunna have to be happy with 3.6ghz till you get better ram but then again you could always try not upping ram voltage :/

Anyway gratz on your first cpu oc... did my first cpu oc today too :D

yeah I would agree with Darkzy.
Again congratulations on your first overclock, did mine too a couple of days ago :D

Not bad mate not bad at all.

With the E8400 you have a number of options open to you. What I would suggest is now that you know your system will run at 3.6 GHz, you should see what your max FSB is.

And once you know that then you can up the multi and who knows you might get to the magical 4GHz mark.

How to find that out is simple. Drop your multi to the lowest it will go. 6 if my memory serves is what we used to use. Then using SetFSB - in windows - up your FSB three of four at time. Run some application like super pi just to see if it freezes or not. And if not up the fsb some more.

You will have to drop your memory down to the lowest divider too by the way.

The reason behind this is to find out what is possible with your system. If you FSB can do 500 say then you have a pretty good CPU. Some CPU's have done a fair bit more than that but they are rare.

Thanks for the info. The thing about finding my max FSB is that the multiplier is currently on 9 (its highest) and my FSB is currently 410 giving an overclock of 3.7. With this FSB and with my RAM currently on it's lowest divider (2.00) my RAM is still being overclocked slightly.

Basically, i dont think its worth finding out my max FSB since i dont think my ram would take much more.
