first overclock...

Hi,

Im sure there are many such threads on here...

but if anyone has any advice or threads I can look at to help me overclock my comp it would be much appreciated.

Gigabyte Z97X-SLI
i5 4690K
Kingston HyperX 16GB (2x8GB)
Raijintek Themis Evo Professional CPU Cooler

Ideally something simple would be great! I've not overclocked before and only recently completed first build. Have looked online and found one guide for a similar board, but looked fairly extensive. Not looking to push the limits of my cpu, just seems silly not to overclock a bit at least. any advice welcomed.

thanks

Manually set Vcore to 1.25v
Change CPU Clock ratio to 42

Boot into windows and see if its stable by whatever means you prefer (Gaming or stress testing) . If its stable and temps are good then boot back into Bios and raise clock ratio to 43/44/45. Keep going until its no longer stable. You can stop if your happy but if temps are good you can start raising the Vcore bit by bit. I wouldnt go above 1.35v for 24/7. Some people try and stay under that. Its all about trial and error really.

thanks dempsey. That looks fairly simple..is that really all that is required for a simple overclock?

Also (and forgive me again for the 'common' question) but could you recommend a safe stress test program? I don't play games, just video and photo editing pretty much.

That looks pretty straight forward :)

might give that a go myself ...if it's that straight forward

temps as in being in the 60's when gaming is ok ?

sorry to thread jump btw :)

I don't really use stress test programs to test as they put an unrealistic hammering on the CPU that gaming/rendering/editing wouldn't. But from what Ive seen, people use Prime95/Aida64. You could also try IntelBurnTest on maximum stress level for maybe 10 passes. This will heat the chip up fairly quickly so keep an eye on that. Just to note though, it could pass any of those with flying colors, but fail a different stress program.

thanks i'll give it a whirl. i'm not really interested in pushing the chip too hard, more noise from the fans! I like my fairly quiet build with fans on medium setting (R4 case and fans). Naturally I know this flies in the face of good overclocking where the more cool air passing through the better! I'd be happy with around 4.2ish though. If you think i could achieve this by starting my Vcore a bit lower let me know, otherwise i'll do as you suggest and try it at 1.25 and see how it goes.

If you're happy with 4.2Ghz then just set CPU Clock Ratio to 42 and Vcore to 1.25. It should have no problem being stable at that, it would need to be a bad chip to not run that. If that works no problem then you can lower the Vcore until its no longer stable. Then bump it up a notch or 2 and away you go :)

it seems stable at 1.12V, cpu clock ratio 42.

although it doesn't seem to like prime at all and gets up to 90c in under ten mins.

IBT doesn't go over 70 on high mode though.

Should i be concerned that it doesn't like prime?

Is it worth lowering the Vcore much more?
