Not o/c Q6600, memory, fsb or changed bios yet, just completed build, cooling, XP install & tweaks & stability tests at stock, SATA config as AHCI

Found stable o/c on GTX using 169.21 WHQL drivers, used Rivatuner to config a 60% and 100% fan profiles + several o/c profiles, also used Core Temp

Initially system idle on GPU 60% fan and Tuniq fan lowest :-
GPU core = 54
GPU ambient = 39
CPU = 33 all cores

System idle on GPU 100% fan and Tuniq fan highest :-
GPU core = 50
GPU ambient = 35
CPU = 31 all cores

For synthetic benchmarks left GPU fan 100% and Tuniq on max
Max GPU core = 60
Max GPU ambient = 43
Max CPU = 37 all cores

Results below for 3DMark2001, 05 and 06 - also underclocked the OC2 to reference GTX clocks, then ran OC2 stock and then changed individual clocks before finishing with all clocks increased

GPU Clocks 2001 05 06 (ie 3DMark2001, 3DMark05 and 3DMark06)

Ref 575/1350/1800 44473 15072 11922
OC2 621/1450/2000 45435 15212 12172
OC2 621/1674/2000 46196 15167 12238
OC2 648/1450/2000 46017 15494 12045
OC2 621/1450/2052 45631 15192 12090
OC2 648/1674/2052 46076 15157 12279

Will be interesting if the o/c has a larger effect once I've got the Q6600 running circa 3.5GHz rather than stock

I def couldn't get the core anywhere near 670ish or shader over 1700, nor memory near 2100 even though the temps were fine, must be the limits of my card, so have backed them all off a bit

I'd read on some o/c tests that the GTX doesn't like a big memory o/c if the core and shaders are anywhere near 650/1700 so am happy with 2052

The core and shader clocks I hope make up for not being able to come close to the Ultra's 2160 memory

Quite pleased with 648/1674/2052 over reference boards 575/1350/1800, maybe I could have got the OCUK one though over the BFG OC2 and reached the same

looking at the G92 cores and what FPS it gets in Crysis, i think memory bandwidth and speed doesn't matter in most games. that's why i leave my GTX memory at stock (when not benchmarking) and overclock the hell out of the core. that way, i can maximise the FPS and gaming experience i get.

found out with 621/1512 core (max for me is 648/1512 :( ) i get extra 2 FPS in Crysis benchmarks, which is a LOT.

Certainly with Q6600 at only 2.4GHz with stock memory settings in bios it appears that o/c GTX memory in synthetic benchmarks has a negative effect sometimes and little effect in others
Maybe 2000MHz with a 384-bit bus is enough ?
I may try GTX memory at stock and see if I can push the core and shaders a little more and re-test

Nice overclocks, as a matter of interest can you run CoD4 (assuming you have it!) with with the card overclocked, I have my BFG GTX running at 600/1450/1800 and I get a blue screen in one of the Nvidia driver files.

I can however bench the card when overclocked with no issues.

I'm not sure i would want to run the card at those fequencies just for 357 marks in 3dmark. Thats why I've left my 8800gt at the default pre-overclocked speeds. I tried overclocking from 650/1625/1900 to 710/1777/2050 and while it ran fine and not too hot i gained next to nothing in terms of performance. All games looked the same. 3dmark06 scored an extra 3-400 and cysis gained 2fps! Its a long time since i last had a graphics card that i didnt overclock. I think the last one was a geforce2-MX and i didnt know how to then

i've just been playing with 8800 gts 512's in sli

stock clocks with a 3ghz quad vs 800/2100 clocks there was only a 400point difference.

I upped the quad to 3.6ghz and the score then wen't up by 2500 points

My cpu is definately bottlenecking these cards, which is a shame, as it's a 680i board, and these don't clock quad too well :(

Im looking to get a GTX or a 512mb GTS... cant decide weather its worth it tbh, as i think my CPU may hold me back (its at its limit at 3.2ghz)

By the looks of things the cards are bottlenecked by CPUs a fair bit as clocking them up doesnt seem to make much of a difference

Thanks for the feedback, Think I'm going to re-test after I've overclocked the cpu, memory and fsb using stock GTX v overclocked GTX to see if any cpu bottleneck is somehow holding back the above results

I'm ok with the GTX temps and I've run the 3DMark06 tests several times back to back with the overclocked settings after pc has been on for 3+ hours in with room door closed, radiator on full and no ventillation - still temps ok and no graphical glitches/artifacts or lockups

Def tempted to leave the memory at 2000 though, suppose I need to do some game testing next, I've got COD4 - How do I benchmark in COD4 ?

**** think i will just use FRAPS ****

Only tried one game, FEAR v1.08
Ran at 1920x1200 with 4AA/16AF, every in game setting maxed out except soft shadows off, ran stock v overclocked GTX with Q6600 stock

621/1450/2000 = min 39fps - ave 78fps - max 187fps
648/1674/2052 = min 41fps - ave 81fps - max 204fps

lol 2yrs ago with old rig I was barely above 40fps at 1024x768 2AA/2AF and low-medium settings, I can see a 2nd singleplayer campaign coming on

Now to the cpu for some proper gains to be had

Just for your reference I am running a 8800GTX along with a C2D E4300.

In most games you won't really notice the difference between say my cpu and a cpu of the same type at say 3.6ghz. This is simply due to the fact that most games only show a difference in frame rate between cpus at low resolutions (ie to push more of the bottleneck onto the cpu). Concluding that at the moment most games are in some part GPU limited. Obviously exceptions to this are RTS games which rely more on the cpu for handling the AI of all the units etc. - This may also change in the future as more games become multi threaded to make use of the ever growing popularity of quad core cpus.

3DMark05 & 06 are not indicative of gaming performance anyway so I wouldn't use results from either benchmark to base your purchase on.

I'll let us know what kinda clock i get out of my overclockers unbranded 8800 GTX... Just treated my self to one and it's sitting next to me on my desk at work !!!! i can't stop looking at it !!! LOL

I got 630/1650/1050 out of mine but I only overclocked to have a crack at the Crysis benchmark. Oh, and I tried a benchmark and got about 12,500.

kool, i just installed ntune, and it seems to have huge issues with my PC, though it looks like i can adjust nearly every thing, even my motherboard through windozs....

I've never had much success with ntune, even with my old Abit NF7-S Socket A board, I wouldn't recommend adjusting motherboard/bios settings from within windows but thats only my own preference

At 1920x1200 and full eye candy, i doubt my CPU is holding my 8800gtx back in COD4.
