I have just finished my first pc build and when I power on all the fans in the system power on and LEDs light up but my monitor gets no signal.

Any ideas I have no idea where to start

Are all power connections connected included the 4 or 8 pin for cpu power and both power supplies to the GPU.

Also try a CMOS reset and can you list the full specs :)

I have just removed the 6 pin on the gpu and it's on and am now installing windows however I have just noticed the fans on the gpu are not spinning

Should my 280x fans be spinning during this ?

1) make sure all the power sockets are plugged in correctly
2) connect your monitor to the gpu (any type of connector you want)
if still blank screen, then:
3) plug your monitor to the mobo's gpu connector, bootup and check your bios settings and set: display to discrete gpu, then go back to step 1+2

Is your monitor connected to the motherboard or GPU?

Can you list the full specs please.

My eyes rolled then I sniggered - before remembering my idiotic mistakes when getting into building PCs. I cooked a Thunderbird CPU because I cleaned the TIM off the heatsink. I bought a lovely new AMD cpu, Intel motherboard and wondered why it wouldn't fit...the list goes on

Glad you got it sorted and enjoy your new build :D

One thing when I had to re apply the thermal paste I wiped what was on the heat sink and cooler with tissue then re applied that shouldn't cause an issue should it.

I did this as we has some issues fitting the cooler and when it was wiped we got the majority off just did not use the alcohol to get the rest it also hadn't set

This has been the most stressful hour I had in a long time

Shouldn't have used tissue really. Fibres get into the paste rendering it less effective. Should use a lint free cloth and proper TIM removal stuff (or any isopropyl alcohol) Shouldn't matter too much though. What did you replace the stock TIM with?

It was tube of thermal paste we put it on and had to remove the heat sink then just used a bit more that was in the tube after scraping off what was previously on

We used kitchen rolls so it wasn't like tissue paper which I can imagine would have been a lot worse

What's TIM I'm a bit worried now :(

Don't worry a friend of mine did almost exactly the same thing on the PC I upgraded for him.

He had a display, but spent a day trying to get sound though the HMDI cable, before texting me as a last resort.

It took 20 mins of texting to before I remembered the new mobo had an hdmi out. :) The graphics card was the old one, so I made the mistake of assuming he'd plug everything back in the same place. :P
