I have checked out a few of the forums and you guys seem to make the most sense so here goes:
Currently I have a Pre-built computer which is quite old (6 years and 5 months) and noisy
:
Amd Athlon 64 3000+
1GB RAM, 160GB HDD
Ati Radeon 9200SE 256
As this summer is the only one I'm going to get to actually focus on something other than studies (2nd year university starts in Sept) I thought I could build a decent machine. One that will be good enough for gaming, decent enough for multi-tasking and will be reliable for over 5 years!
I have been researching for a few weeks now and have come up with a spec:

I know this spec goes over my budget of £550, but I do realize that LGA775 socket is going to be phased out by Intel soon so I was thinking I could wait maybe a month or so till the price drops to around my budget.
The socket is "dead" but I won't be doing much overclocking (if at all) and I wont be replacing any components in the future till I run the whole computer down.
Its irritating that Intel i5 and new motherboards will be coming out nearer the time of purchase, even USB 3.0 next year from what I heard! But I don't think I will be losing much if i opt for established but older hardware than wait for the newer stuff? Unless the i7 stuff drops £200!
So in summary:
1.what do people think of my spec for a build, anything that could be done differently? Bearing in mind I can wait up to middle of August before buying so prices could fall?
2. For someone who is not going to upgrade anything apart from RAM and possibly the disc drive to blu-ray, its quad core LGA775 good enough to last a few years with decent performance?
3. Do you think its worth waiting longer than Sept for newer and "better" stuff
Possibly the longest first post ever?
