I have checked out a few of the forums and you guys seem to make the most sense so here goes:

Currently I have a Pre-built computer which is quite old (6 years and 5 months) and noisy:D:

Amd Athlon 64 3000+
1GB RAM, 160GB HDD
Ati Radeon 9200SE 256

As this summer is the only one I'm going to get to actually focus on something other than studies (2nd year university starts in Sept) I thought I could build a decent machine. One that will be good enough for gaming, decent enough for multi-tasking and will be reliable for over 5 years!

I have been researching for a few weeks now and have come up with a spec:
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/9297/pcspecfromoverclockers.jpg

I know this spec goes over my budget of £550, but I do realize that LGA775 socket is going to be phased out by Intel soon so I was thinking I could wait maybe a month or so till the price drops to around my budget.

The socket is "dead" but I won't be doing much overclocking (if at all) and I wont be replacing any components in the future till I run the whole computer down.

Its irritating that Intel i5 and new motherboards will be coming out nearer the time of purchase, even USB 3.0 next year from what I heard! But I don't think I will be losing much if i opt for established but older hardware than wait for the newer stuff? Unless the i7 stuff drops £200!

So in summary:

1.what do people think of my spec for a build, anything that could be done differently? Bearing in mind I can wait up to middle of August before buying so prices could fall?

2. For someone who is not going to upgrade anything apart from RAM and possibly the disc drive to blu-ray, its quad core LGA775 good enough to last a few years with decent performance?

3. Do you think its worth waiting longer than Sept for newer and "better" stuff

Possibly the longest first post ever?

i am overbudget sorry just had to add the 2 intake fans for the case:D

thanks for quick reply!

Thanks for the quick reply, seems like there is going to be a lot of case fans!! How is the noise in the stock Cpu cooler? I like the computer to be silent but these after market CPU coolers are just ridiculously massive:eek: and seem fiddly to install!

Would a AMD Phenom II X3 720 be a good processor as well, its so difficult to compare the intel and amd counterparts! :(

Also heard somewhere that some motherboards are picky when it comes to RAM, is OCZ a good maker of ram...?

.... and power supply?? Will the modular cables reach the CPU power pin on the motherboard (which is on the top near to the the left) when the PSU is at the bottom of the case as if with the ANTEC 300 ?

How much do people know about the Asus M4A78T-E AMD 790GX (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard? Is it a easy to work with motherboard in terms of connecting stuff up internally?

Will either (XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 XT 1GB and Nvidia GTX 260) graphics cards fit in the Coolermaster ELite 335 case?

SO many more questions, my head is literally spinning!

I Still am unsure about the OCZ PSU and RAM though!

I would go with the 1gb 4870 over the 260.

And AM2+/AM3 mobos are the way to go. We all know you cant futureproof your computer, but it makes no sense to choose a dead socket over AMD which is offering the best value for money right now.

I dont think you can go wrong with the Phenom II 940

Processor: AMD Phenom II 940 £132.99

RAM: OCZ 1066mhz 4GB £38.98

PSU: OCZ 600W £48.99

Mobo: Ideally, Id go with the ASUS M3A79-T, the 790FX board that can be found for about £90 online right now, but its not available here on OCUK.

GPU: XFX 1GB 4890 £140.99
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-126-XF

Total: £559.92

Jus a tidge over budget >_>

The 940 will only work in AM2+ boards as it only contains a ddr2 memory controller, The 945 + 955 have both ddr2 and ddr3 memory contolers so they can work in both sets of boards.

940 is stunning value for money though...especially since OCUK have dropped their price to jus over £130!

You could either push the boat out now and spend another £50-£60 and upgrade the processor to AM3 and DDR3 RAM...but top of the line DDR2 > value DDR3.

Nearly getting to it!

After a bit of pondering, This is the spec i could come up with!
phenomiix3spec.jpg

I'm tempted to pay the £50 premium for the Phenom II X4 955 though....

One question about the Asus motherboard in the spec: Will the Phenom II AM3 processors be plug and play or would I need to flash the Bios to a newer one? Im not sure how its possible if the computer doesn't post at boot up with the processor installed??

How do you flash a Bios ??! (noob)

Anything else apart from the processor (still debating which) that anyone would change?

If you want something that's gonna last for 5 years, I wouldn't be getting anything less than a quad-core CPU. Games and other applications are going to be making use of the extra cores more and more. If you can pay the extra for the X4 955, I would definitely recommend it.

Asus boards are good but tend to be a little picky about RAM. I had an Asus board and OCZ RAM, and the board didn't really like it. I've heard of a few people with the same problem. I'd be tempted to swap the RAM for some Corsair or something.

Remember to keep an eye on the clearence line section of the site. I picked up my cpu for dirt cheap on there just because it had no box or stock cooler. But who uses stock coolers ;)
And welcome to ocuk :D

Well Im still gonna keep on rooting for the Phenom II 940 with the Asus M3A79-T. Unless youre gonna stretch out the 955, 940 is what you want. Seriously good value for money.

And you can buy a cheaper 4870 than that, the Powercolor is about £105 I think right now. The Dark Knight looks better and most probably cools a little better, but meh, I dont see the point in paying more for the same card.

Especially in a case with no side window lol :D
