Hey

I have been offered a position as a trainee quantity surveyor. 13k starting pay on day release to Greenwich University apparently... Rising to 24k after 4 or so years and I would be finishing with a degree at the end.

Who here is a quantity surveyor and how do you like the job?

Cheers.

I applied to be a quantity surveyor a while back, seemed like an ok job, very maths based which is why I never got the job, (went to the interview which went really well but had to do a test paper which I didnt do so well on), if your good at maths I imagine it would be a brilliant career, the pay can be very high for quantity surveyors (40k ish).

I dont like counting especially... but I got an A in GCSE maths and an A in GCSE statistics... I like to think I can count :D

Its just a lot of food for thought at the moment..

Im 17 btw. I have also applied for Business administration and marketing at Kent and Brighton Uni for 2009 so thats a backup I spose.. Im just so torn

dah..

Do you like counting ?

Indeed. I did some QS on a construction site during an engineering placment aged 18 I think. £250 pw I irc.

I calculated volumes of spoil and number of trucks needed.
I walked along a road working out how many of each kerb types I would need and double checked against drawings.
I signed in/out invoices/payments/delieveries.

Ok, but hardly challenging or exciting. Very much a mathematical job.

So long as you don't require job satisfaction or want to be doing anything remotely interesting, then it's a good job I guess.

That's a bit harsh. I am sure SOME people must get job satisfaction out of counting, and drawing up bills of quantities.

I get no job satisfaction but I earn six figures to compensate.
It's whatever pays well with me, I was hardly going anywhere doing session playing or studio engineering like I wanted. I use music as a hobby now.

I'd say go for it.

your 27 and you earn 100k + what do you do

I worked in a QS office for about a year and did some field work. It was ok but never really inspired me. I think you can earn a lot in years to come though. It isn't all maths based, a lot is down to researching and looking at trends and previous project costs.

Brick counters:p

edit - you'll end up prostituting yourself to the RICS so don't bother :D

You won't be popular with the engineers god knows my lectures are always complaining about QS's lol

Aero

There's always someone else to blame. :p

I know that QS's always give Architects some serious abuse as well. :D
