My PC is getting a make-over - new mobo, CPU, RAM and for the first time an SSD for the OS and programs.

I plan installing the OS onto the SSD and getting it up-to-date before reconnecting any of the HDDs, am I right in thinking this is the best way to go about it?

Install the os on to the SSD without the HDD connected is correct.

Is there already an os on the HDD? Or will you be wiping it clean.

Disable disk defrag for the ssd as this kills them quicker.

Thanks for the defrag comment - Google seems to have turned up how to check / do this.

I have an OS on one of the HDDs. I also have a mirror for it, and a separate HDD which I was using as a form of backup as well as having a NAS.

I'll be wiping one of the HDDs clean, creating Users on it, making my normal login to have it's home directory in that Users dir and letting the PC spend ages copying the data cross from the other HDD. Then I'll recreate the mirror, then I'll look at the 3rd HDD to see what best to do with it.

If you install Windows 7 then you will definitely need to disabled Disk Defrag but if it is Windows 8 or 8.1 then you will not need to disabled it because it already supported SSD TRIM and the new Disk Defrag took full advantage of SSD.

I think windows 7 sp1 does this automatically...

It is definitely Windows 7 and I will check about the defrag. I'll also be moving the page file to the HDD once I connect it.

Thanks.

Windows 7 enables TRIM by default too.

fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

from an elevated command prompt if you want to check.

fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0

if you want to set.

Arghh!!!! Nothing on the screen.

The mobo, CPU, RAM & SSD are new, the case, PSU, HDDs & ODDs are not. Fitting the mobo went very well, had to unplug all the HDDs to fit in the SDD but have plugged them all in again and I can feed the HDDs spinning when the power is on. The ODD opened when I pressed the button and I slipped the W7 disk in. It was opening & closing itself rather than opening & staying open.

At first the CPU fan started & then stopped after a few seconds but reseating the RAM fixed that.

I've not plugged the SATA cables for the HDDs in, just the power. I've taken out the BIOS batter for 30 seconds or so, I've tried DVI and VGA cables to the monitor. I've double-checked the horrid tiny little plugs from the front panel, they seem OK. Certainly the power button works as does the power LED.

Mobo is a Gigabyte F2A88XM-D3H, CPU is an A10-7800 so there are no expansion cards plugged in - the monitor is plugged into the graphics on the mobo.

CPU fan spinning, all HDDs spinning, ODD is live (tray will come out), fan in case front spinning.

Using an Eizo monitor have tried with DVI and VGA, no joy with either. My other monitor has the same number of pixels.
