Hi

I am about to push the button on buying a new Samsung 840 500GB today (Really want to try some SSD goodness), but wanted to check what my options were with regards to keeping my current windows install intact.

Basically i have two 500GB HDD at the moment, one with the operating system on and one with additional files/programmes. I also have a terbayte drive that is filled with VST instrument samples and nothing else (so i guess that can be taken out of the equation for now). Nothing is connected in RAID.

Is there a way to copy/clone everything on my 500GB C:\ HDD to his new 500GB SSD? and basically keep everything as it was? If so, how!?

Also, before i do this, i kind of want to try out Windows 8, so before cloning my Windows 7 install, i assume i can just unplug my currently connected HDD and just plug the new SSD in for a play with Windows 8 for a bit yes?

Sorry, i have been out of the game with building/upgarding PC's so don't want to make a balls up!

Thanks

P.S. I also have 2 TB external HDD so i can back everything up that is on the two 500GB hard drives on that if needed.

Normally I would recommend a clean install on the SSd and re-load the apps and docs from backup, as I had a lot of trouble cloning from one drive to another when I radically changed the system storage topology. That is from a SSD+1 HDD to a 2xSSD + 1HDD, the system really didn't like it.

however lots of people don't seem to have any issues and use the tools mentioned in this thread.

Yes indeed. Install W8 to the SSD, have a go at it. You can always restore the drive and start again.

Would you say the 500GB 840 is good? Can get them for good prices at the moment and as far as i can see the only draw backs are not as good write performance as the high end MLC drives and also life span?

Neither will probably affect me as it is just for everyday use/gaming and digital audio workstation stuff) and ive read the larger capacity drive (500GB) makes lifespan less of an issue.

500Gb SSD is serious money. Technically a larger drive will last longer, but total lifespan will likely be longer than the rest of the system. i.e. probably not a big consideration. The 840 is a good drive, but so is the Plextor Pro.

But, as Samsung currently have a cashback offer as well, I'd get an 840.
