I have build my computer and plugged everything in and i am ready to turn it on for the first time.

I am wondering how I go about this as I need to install windows as well.

I am using an overclocked bundle if that makes any difference.

Thanks

Once you're sure you have everything plugged in correctly - and not until - press the power button. Simple as that really. :)

If it all works, put the Windows CD in the drive and off you go.

I am sure that everything is but as this is my first build I am paranoid about getting it wrong. Is there anything that I can do to check it is right?

Most likely it won't switch on, or will beep loudly at you, or some component just won't work. In extreme cases it certainly could pop something.

Ive turned it on and nothing popped everything is spinning/doing what it should. Have I survived or is there still a risk something could happen?

Of course something could go wrong - it's the nature of electronic equipment.

My advice would be to stop worrying and enjoy it.

you are looking for a message on screen indicating that no OS boot disk could be found.

If your not getting anything on screen, then you have an issue.

I ordered win 7 from the internet as part of their student deal. I requested a disc as i was going to install it onto a new computer so couldnt download it. The product key that they supplied is coming up as incorrect. what can I do?

Can you point me in the right direction to contact them? I cant find the part i need. One bit was saying i need to pay 50 quid to email them!!!!

Well, you can install Windows without the product key - check that everything is working hardware wise. Then you can sort out the licensing issue.

Firstly, check VERY carefully that you've typed it correctly and haven't missed a character, transposed any letters, anything like that. In 90% of cases that'll be the problem.

i think its because the student deal is an upgarde version?

meaning you have to have XP/vista b4 hand???

i think???

First time I turned on my first build, the computer exploded and tripped the upstairs lighting circuit. Turns out I hadn't put the rubber standoffs on the CPU cooler, so it just connected the entire board together and shorted it.

I will be installing the student version on a new hard drive tomorrow hopefully, I found a work around for the activation issue (of course, haven't tried it yet) but by all accounts it works fine, but I didn't want to post a link to the webpage without first checking if this would be acceptable on these forums, can anyone comment on this please?

otherwise Roonaldo, do a google for 'clean install windows 7 with upgrade media' and see what you can find.

While you're waiting for MS to get back to you - have a mooch about in the BIOS just to familiarise yourself with the environment.

Check that all your settings are correct for the CPU and memory and sit in the 'PC Health' screen (or similar) and monitor your temps for a bit.

Also if your installing Win7 64 bit make sure HPET 64 is enabled.
