Current system (just got it, at the very limit of my budget, but I'm looking to upgrade over time, so I'm creating a chart so I know when I need how much money for the next year or so)

Antec 300
OCZ StealthXtreme 700W
Asus P8P67 Pro
Seagate Barracuda 500GB (x2, I had a spare lying around)
MSI 'Hawk' GTX460
4GB Corsair XMS3
i5 2500K
Corsair H50
Samsung P2450 24" monitor

From here, what would be the best and cheapest upgrade path, allowing for the fact that some new stuff will no doubt come out soon?

Thanks! SSD is definitely interesting, but they're a bit pricey at the moment - when they hit £1/GB for a 60GB one, I'll definitely be adding one as my OS drive. Considering replacing the PSU first, actually - it seems to be the noisyest bit, though I'm having trouble actually locating the noise...

when you say noisey, how do you mean? is it the fan or are you getting a squealing type noise from it? is it posible the noise is coming from your gpu fan?

It's what I'd expect from a fan - the sort of deep, consistent humming. No squeal, no vibration/oscillation noise. Exactly like my laptop, but about two octaves deeper. I went for the 460 'cause I hear they scale well, so at some point I'll get a second for SLI, but that won't be too soon - I don't currently game enough for it to be worth it. Got out of the habit, having only a fairly weedy lappy to use for a few years while at school. ...More shiny fans and soundproofing stuff might be a good one, actually. Cheap, fast, easy. On an incidental note, my second HD has vanished. Connected by power and SATA, but doesn't show up in BIOS, POST, Control Panel, Device Manager or Disk Management. When I take it out and put it into a USB caddy, it works perfectly - there's nothing wrong with the drive. Ideas?

Why don't you just enjoy what you have instead of worrying about things?

only thing i can think of off the top of my head is have you checked that both the power cable and sata cable are properly connected, not just to the drive but also the motherboard?

i dont think he's worrying, think he is just being pro-active and planning ahead so he has funds available when he wants to upgrade ;)

Seems a bit pointless. Anyone with half a brain knows that computer hardware is fast changing. Seems to me the thread starter is just bragging about his new system or is just sad. He has the latest technology so why bother worrying?

did you read the OP??

i dont see anything to suggest he is bragging, or that he is sad. he is simply trying to plan or have at least a bit of an idea what his likely upgrade path will be and an approximate budget??

really dont see how that qualifies as being sad or bragging

If the thread starter is really concerned about what to upgrade next?

Ivy Bridge will be out early next year, also there will be better graphics card out etc etc etc. It is really not hard to work things out is it?

I have a limited and inflexible budget, over time as well as at any given moment. I'm planning on skipping IvyBridge - and whatever comes after it, frankly. I'm not intending to replace CPU/MB until after I finish university. I don't like wasting money, or buying things and then kicking myself a month later, hence why I waited for SandyBridge once I knew I had sufficient money set aside. I'm not aiming to brag, I'm asking the people here, who as far as I can see really would know, where they think the bottlenecks are going to be, and therefore the cheapest and most efficient path for any upgrades would be, so that I can begin to set aside the necessary money with a view to having it amassed by a particular date. The consensus seems to be get an SSD, and leave the rest alone for the time being, which I certainly appreciate, and thank you all for.

highly unlikely he'd need or want to upgrade his cpu next year! :p

i think the op was just looking a bit of advice as to the direction of his next tweak/upgrade. pretty straightforward question if ya ask me. but hey we all have a different read/take on things

You have the latest technology at the moment, maybe get an SSD for now. As for next year your system will be outdated as Ivy Bridge will be out as well as better graphics cards, ram and everything else. Even my cat can understand that ;)

really dont think your understanding the question the op asked!! lol :p

I understand what he is saying. What i'm saying is that he is worrying too much.

He has the latest stuff now so why worry? You are Irish so i don't expect you to get it

Sweet, personal insults. The realm of someone who has lost the ability to sensibly discuss. Ah well, I'm even more convinced you don't understand the op's question. Lol
