First time ATI user - Help

OK, not quite first time, I had one about ten years ago, anyway,

I've just brought an ati 4850 for my secondary system and I'm wondering if it's possible to have different profiles for games like you can do with nvidia cards, I've had a mooch around the control centre and nothing seems to stand out, I'm probably missing the obvious though, any help would be much appreciated.

at the top you should see profiles. You can get to the manager from there.

The card I purchased is http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-168-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938, now the thing is it's a noisy little bugger, is there anyway I can turn the fan down?, it seems to be running at full speed, I thought once I had installed the drivers it would quieten down but it hasn't.

Set all you're settings then go to the Profile Menu at the top, select the Profile Manager, give your profile a name, make sure the All Catalyst Control Centre Settings is selected in the 'This Profile Includes' and save it, then just repeat, or use ATi Tray Tools instead of the CCC, as with that, you can do the Profiles exactly like you do on Nvidia cards, it also does everything the CCC does, and more.

EDIT:

ATi Overdrive on left, click the key to unlock, then use the Manual Fan Control slider which becomes unlocked also to control the fan speed.

I had the 8800gt with that cooler. It doesn't support speed control unfortunately.

ummmm, I've got that working but let me explain the problem, my default 3D settings are 'application managed', now I load up my 'Half-Life (1)' profile which is set to 8xaa & 16xaf which works fine, but when I exit the game my 3D settings don't revert back to 'application managed', they stay at last activated profile settings which in this case is 8xaa & 16xaf, is that normal ?, I'm sure that's not how it works with nividia, will 'ATI Tray Tools' remedy that ?

You could create a short cut called desktop with your desktop settings. Then click on it when you exit the profiles you want.

That doesn't work, not a happy bunny.

Nvidia 1 ATI 0 so far, wish I had brought an nvida card now, I play a lot of old games and the profile manger for nvidia is a god send.

Well you can change it with this one, I've just whacked it down to 35%, much better now.

It should do, I use profiles as I use a HDMI output on my card a lot as an audio output. You have to set all your settings to default (balanced in 3d settings), then go into profile, and create one called Desktop, and then click save All settings, rather than the other option, I forget the name (save current settings?).
You can also open it by rightclicking on the CCC logo in your task bar, or by setting it to create a desktop shortcut. As mentioned previously you need one for HL2, and one for desktop, both with different settings. It sounds like your desktop one still has the HL2 settings saved in the profile, so nothing is changing when you load it.

Stop whining and just manually change the settings before you play the game. Hell it must take you at least 10 seconds!
