Hi there. I asked for some suggestions for my first build around christmas time last year, but decided to wait until summer to finally take the plunge.
Didnt think to save any of the specs that were suggested which was rather stupid of me, but I was hoping some of you may be able to help me out again. (Im guessing even if I had saved them that they might be a little out of date because of pricing etc?)

I'll be needing just the base, so no keyboard etc. but Windows 7 will have to fit into the £800ish budget (A SSD would be nice too). It will be used for gaming and web browsing on a 19" monitor.

I've been gaining little bits of knowledge throughout the last 6 months but have a few questions if you guys would be kind enough to answer, forgive me if they are obvious:

1) For my usage and budget, AMD or Intel?
2) Once I've put it all together, do I need to do anything before I turn it on/ install windows? Other than making sure everything is connected properly :p
3) If I was to get both a SSD & HDD, would both work fine once windows had been installed onto the SSD? Or would I need to do something to the HDD to get it to work after windows had loaded?

Thanks very much and happy fathers day! :)

this is a AMD build without a SSD

i've gone to the lovely and reliable Intel route. It has the i3 processor that is very good for its price, and this means you also have a good 750gb storage, and a 5850 which totally destroys the 5770. You also have £15 left to spend, so you may want to get a better case?

£1 less- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-211-SE&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Am I right in thinking that AMD 890GX has on board graphics? Is there a cheaper board without it or is this the best option?

Will the 1600mhz ram run at that speed straight out of the box or will I have to make some adjustments? Thought I read somewhere about 1333 being the max for AMD builds?

only the 890GX and 890FX chipsets do crossfire properly, if this is something you want in the future?

older chipsets that do crossfire are 790GX/FX which dont have SATA and USB3.0(except for one random gigabyte board that has USB3.0)

The 1600omhz ram will run at the default frequency of the CPU, usually 1333mhz, the higher speed rating allows you to overclock and push it faster without issues.

Ahh ok. Yeah 8x/8x crossfire sounds like something I might need if I ever get a second 5770. Thanks for clearing up the ram issue aswell. :)

will when games get more advanced, people said a 260GTX would last, but then crysis came out.

5850 wont fit into the budget right now :( I did some reading and it looks a little overkill for my monitor anyway.

Btw 2x 5770 beats a single 5850?? So this would be a good upgrade if I decided to get a bigger monitor?

Made this spec myself based on the suggestions you guys gave..10p short of £870 but I think I can stretch that far :D How does it look?

the ram is a bit OTT, im not dismissing it as rubbish stuff, its not, its just that it could be £30 spent on a better case? although the Antec 300 isnt rubbish either

rest is great
