Hey, It's my first build and I'm planning to use it for gaming mostly, and put this machine together. Open to better components for my bucks :) Already got a mouse, keyboard and monitor :)
Case- Coolermaster 430 elite
MOBO - Asus M5A78L-M USB3 AMD 760G AM3+
Processor - Not sure whether to get the AMD quad core Bulldozer or just wait for the Phenom to drop in price?
RAM - Gskill Ripjaws x 1600mhz - 2x4 - 8gb
PSU - Antec TruePower New Modular 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply ( wondering if this is overkill for my setup and get the 550w one instead? )
OS - Microsoft Windows 7 Bundle - Home Premium 64 Bit Comes with a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6GB/s 16MB Cache HDD.
Optical - Asus 24x DVD±RW DRW-24B3ST - Retail (Black)
GPU - Asus GeForce GTX 550Ti 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Hi there,

If its for gaming can I suggest you ditch the rubbish GTX550ti for something with some poke, such as,

GTX460/560/6870

PSU - Antec TruePower New Modular 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply ( wondering if this is overkill for my setup and get the 550w one instead? )

It is, the 550W is perfect for any of the above mentioned GPU's

Processor - Not sure whether to get the AMD quad core Bulldozer or just wait for the Phenom to drop in price?

Not sure if you have seen the reviews but the Bulldozer FX is not great with a Phenom being faster clock for clock, the PhenomII X4 955BE/965BE is perfect.

Heres your basket re-done,

Thanks for the quick response guys. A friend of mine did tell me don't get the bulldozer and mentioned the I5 2500k. Might stick with an AMD build and go with the Phenom BE 955, I'm now considering the 6870 which stulid suggested :)

Thanks a lot! Also another question I'm not an expert, but what's the difference with all the different 6870s? Just different clocks/designs or?

Thats all it is (apart from the MSI Hawk, but its increase in clock speeds are irrelevant) the design of the cooler/packaging varies.

Instead of AMD, there is the Sandybridge i3 option,

i3 2100 vs 955be,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i3-2120-2100_5.html#sect0

But you cant overclock this chip (must be a "K" CPU and either a P67 or Z68 board)

Just wanted to check again, to make sure my build is looking good etc, as I've been working my fingers to the bone for this and also will be putting it together on my bday on Tuesday and don't really wont things setting on fire etc lol / not compatible :)

( The AMD build of which Stulid posted )

Many thanks, Sneak :P

Not really, Harddrive prices have shot up due to the flooding in Thailand.

Gives you something to play with:)

Yeah, the problem with the previous specs is the harddrive prices have gone through the roof.

So look above, you are paying more for a 320GB drive than a 500GB drive was not more than two weeks ago.

Is that another suggestion for a build of the same price then?

well you sure as hell can't get the parts from the spec on the 20th at the same price now ;)

depending on how far you can stretch your budget, going with stulids intel suggestion but upping the mb to http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-364-GI will give you an upgrade path to i2500k(you can run the i2500k on the h61 mobo but no overclocking).

sstulid why the 560 with the intel and 6870 with the amd?

£7 more than the lepa but http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-007-XF&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= not sure which would be better.

Hmm..is the I3 actually good for gaming?, considering it's only dual core, compared to the 955BE being a quad. Also, does the prices with the HDDs effect the price of that OEM W7 64bit price then, because that came with the HDD also.

ahh that reminds me of this other thread, let me see if I can find it.

the price of the hdd does effect the os/hdd bundle quite a bit as well.

Okay,I will do some reconsidering on whether to go with an Intel or AMD build. I will also stick with the OS bundle as it's fairly cheap :)
Also I don't really plan to overclock the CPU, but i heard that the stock fans make a bad whining sound so I'm considering to just get a third party heat sink, found this and was wondering if it's any good? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-032-AS&tool=3

if you want an i3 2100 build with a big hard drive then go with this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Home Server GT Intel Core i3 2100 3.10GHz DDR3 - Server £329.99
1 x No Hard Drive Upgrade £0.00
1 x No Operating System £0.00
1 x System 12 Months Standard Warranty £0.00
1 x Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £131.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £79.99
Total : £554.57 (includes shipping : £10.50).

the case is a bit rubbish, but its a small price to pay for a 1TB HDD.

if you ask very nicely in the customer service section they might be able to change the case to the elite 430 for you (it will add ~£15 to £25 to the build i would think)

I've just finished building my PC today(Sig), which is similar to what you are considering. The mobo is absolutely amazing great quality and the 955BE(dont need 965 as you can overclock even faster than that speed and save money) CPU is extremely fast with the 6870 it is perfect for an great gaming PC. Personally it meets all my needs(gaming, web browsing,multi-tasking etc) and Im more than happy :).

But if you do have a bigger budget go with the i3 as that is even more quicker with lower power consumption.
