Hi guys - i've been reading the forums for a while now but this is my first post :)

I'm going to have a go at building my own PC for the first time and so far I have put the following list together

pc_parts.jpg

I'd appreciate it if you could give it the once over and let me know what you think. I'd like to be relatively future proof (as much as I can be) and my budget is £950 max. I'm not planning on overclocking although I might have a go in the future, but mostly planning on using the system for gaming.

I am starting this project from scratch and so have no cables etc. knocking about, not sure if I need to buy anything like that as well.

Just want to make sure I havent made any glaring errors!!

Cheers all

Nothing glaringly obvious other than the choice of OS. Consider getting the 64 bit Vista, especially if your going OEM and plan on getting more RAM in the future. You'll have to ask others about issues with 64 bit though as I'm not sure if there still are any. Either that or buy the full retail which allows you upgrades in the future.

I'm not an expert like these guys, but yeh 64 bit vista i'd say. Also, that ram is so cheep, can't hurt to bang another set in at this weeks price:) Tis a similar rig i have being delivered tomorrow except 4gig of ram and an abit mobo.

Thanks for the replys :)

Are there any issues with running Vista64? Thinking in terms of my printer/scanner, will the OS have drivers for these or are 64 bit drivers readily available? I heard this was a problem in the past but not sure about now.

I have had a quick scan on the web for drivers and it looks like I should be OK, just want to make sure before I purchase. Oh, and will older software run OK (e.g. paint shop pro7)?

Thanks again

Vista 64 is ok, I've had a few issues with sound and many of the apps I was using on XP-32 have had to be upgraded to latest release but otherwise, it's fine.

MS is demanding of companies that if they want their any of their drivers certified for use with 32-bit Vista they'll also have to submit a 64-bit driver. This is spurring the 64-bit driver development that retarded XP 64 adoption.

about time tbh.. I was actually surprised when Vista came in a 32-bit flavour. having just a 64 bit version would have forced the issue.

Microsoft doesn't want to force any issues, they want to make money. Having a 32-bit version available means that they can sell Vista licenses to users of Pemtium Ms, Core Duos, and OEMs using Semprons or other 32-bit procs.

I agree but the message they send out is that they aren't comfortable of letting go of the 32bit OS. For software developers this must be a nightmare. Also, for most people, stick with what's known "tried and tested" is the reason the 32bit OS is the OEM for most PC providers.

I've been having the same concerns about building a new machine and putting Vista 64 on it. I will use it mainly for gaming was concerned about 64 bit support.

It's fine.. but if you have older apps... they may have compatibilty issues but Vidta has a compatibilty feature.

Interestingly both RTCW and HL work under vista 64.. so there you go :)

I suppose the answer is dual booting for those games / apps that aren't compatible.

No probs with 64bit Vista here. I was planning to dual boot with XP if I did have problems but 2 months have passed and I’ve found no need to install XP.

As for the spec. As you say you’re not planning to overclock I’d drop the ‘size of a house’ cooler, but I don’t think that would be a popular view around these parts. :)

How much ram are you running?

If >2 gig how much of a difference does it make?

Hi guys, built my system (woohoo!!) but I am unsure about the system drivers. I tried to install from the mobo disk but when I check the device management it says most drivers are provided by microsoft. Is this right? If not can you tell me how to sort it out please :)

Thanks a lot
