Hi, total PC noob here looking to buy a mid-high end prebuild, as I don't trust myself to not mess up building it myself.

I was thinking along the lines of something like this:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk...a3_5#bLCb3_6+bLCc3_6$bLCl3_6ybLCm3x*.bTiC3U9$

Specs:

Case - *Build Stock* Phanteks Eclipse P360 Air Mid Tower Case Tempered Glass DRGB - Satin Black
Memory - Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO Black 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz AMD Ryzen Tuned DDR4 Memory
Graphics - Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming OC 10GB GDDR6X PCI-Express Graphics Card
M.2 Solid State Drive 1 - Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB M.2 2280 PCI-e 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive
Storage Drive - Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 64 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-76E1T0B/EU)
WiFi - Asus PCE-AC56 Dual-Band Wireless AC1300 PCI-E Adapter
Power Supply - 850W 80 Plus Gold Power Supply
CPU - AMD Ryzen 8 5800X 8 Core/16 Thread CPU with up to 4.7GHz Boost
Motherboard - Gigabyte X570 Gaming X ATX Motherboard
Cooler - OcUK Techlabs 120mm AIO Liquid Cooler

Should I change anything?

I will mainly use it for gaming (possibly even at 4K?).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi welcome

I would ask for a different motherboard as you are paying quite a lot for the board and wifi card combined. There are cheaper B550 options with onboard wifi like the B550 Aorus Pro AC.

A single 2TB SSD would be better imo. Also Samsung drives are overpriced.

As mentioned above, make sure the psu isn't a Kolink. Something like a Corsair RM, RMx, NZXT C, MSI A850GF or Seasonic GX etc would be better.

I would also want a better cooler for the 5800X. An Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240mm/280mm would be better if they can give an ETA on stock.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will contact OC and ask them to make the changes.

I do have one question - would it be ok if I go with a 2tb Samsung 970 EVO Plus instead of the WD Blue, or is Samsung that bad? I don’t mind paying a bit extra for it.

You would be paying twice the price for the Samsung SSD going off the store prices.

You could even get a Gen 4 SSD for less than the 970 Evo. It won't really make much difference for gaming at the minute though, although that should change once Direct storage becomes a thing.

In that case, would it be better to go for a Gen 4 SSD, or is there a hidden catch I’m not seeing?

A Gen 4 won't really make any difference at the minute if you are just gaming. If you are doing things like video editing or moving lots of huge files around then a Gen 4 can help with that. So until Direct storage is a thing then even a SATA SSD would be as fast. Also you can always add a Gen 4 later on down the road if need be. If it was my money I would get the WD Blue SN550 and save the money.

Thanks very much for clarifying.

How important is the motherboard? Is it worth it to go for a more expensive one like this one?

Also, how significant is memory speed? Is it worth it to pay £90 more for 3600MHz over 3200MHz?

Total: £498.68 (includes shipping: £8.70)

Not really worth it unless the X570 board has extra features that you need i.e Extra USB/SATA ports etc. The MSI X570 Tomahawk would be a better option if going with a more expensive board.

Both of those Ram kits are expensive. The 3200MHZ CL16 kit below would be more than good enough.

Thanks, I’ll have a look are those.

One last thing (I promise) - I was wondering if my CPU choice is ok. I would much rather go for a 5900X, but as they are like fairy dust at the moment, I have to settle for a 5800X (although I’ve also heard that it makes little to no difference at higher resolutions).

I was wondering if Rocket Lake is worth considering? Most people seem to say that it’s a complete scam, but the chips do seem to have higher single core clock speeds than the 5800X.

Single-Core clock speed isn't directly relative to IPC and AMD has very good IPC on Zen 3. As Rocket Lake officially hasn't been released yet no-one can say for sure if it's worth going for over 10th Gen Intel.

The best bang for the buck is the i7 10700k that can be had around £250 - £280 if you look elsewhere. If you are going for a pre-built then AMD is the way to go as the 5800x trades blows with the i7 10700k but has the advantage of supporting gen4 SSD.

If you are just gaming then even the R5 5600X would be fine. Even more so at 4K resolution as you are more gpu bound. If you go with the cheaper parts that I have mentioned then you could probably fit a 5900X into the same budget. Not really needed but it would last a bit longer before you needed a new cpu.

I haven't really looked at the Intel reviews so I can't comment on performance. There shouldn't be much difference though at 4K between any Ryzen or Intel cpu. You would have to weigh up the cost vs Ryzen and decide that way. Just make sure to get a good cooler as they can run hot, and you will also need a decent Z590 board i.e Gigabyte Z590 Aorus or MSI Z590 Tomahawk etc.

This is exactly my thinking also before I'd even read it. Too the t.

Biggest concern would be that psu. Its like insurance for your rather expensive build.

However op I'm sure you've heard by now you could be waiting a long long time for stock on the 3080. Potentially even into 2022 by the way things are looking atm. 5800x you should be OK on though
