Hi

I have bought another Samsung 500Gb F1 to go with my current one as I want to dabble in Raid.

My motherboard is an EP35-DS3R. Can someone advise me on what I need to have/do in order to have them set in Raid 0 when I reinstall Vista Ultimate?

Thank You. :)

its not too tasking actually.
You will need to change a setting in your BIOS to change from IDE to RAID drive type (i know your current disk isnt IDE...)

Then when you boot, it will ask you to press something like ctrl+I to enter the raid setup.
Once there, its no different to creating a normal parition, select the raid array you want then the partition(s).

With raid 0 just make sure you keep plenty of backups if you have critical data. They are prone to the occasional problem espically if you have power outage issues.
That being said, Id recommend a Raid 0 even tho mines just failed :)

Hi Adam

I do have the option for RAID in the bios. Is it that simple?

I do have a 1TB Seagate to take the backups so any data I need, I will still have.

yes, its that simple.
It was a bit daunting for me at first, but its worth it.

I doubt you will create the raid within bios its self, it usually needs to be enabled by the steps i mentiond above (confirm with your manual?) and then setup just after the post screen by pressing two buttons.

Yup, adam1v got it right. There are a few options you'll need to set in your BIOS to get RAID going, probably best to refer to your motherboard manual to get the right ones. There'll be a RAID section in the manual.

Either backup a RAID array very often or keep nothing important on there - personally I just install the OS/programs/games on the array and put all my music, videos, documents etc. on a separate storage hard drive which is then backed up every few weeks.

IIRC on my board (P35-DS4) there were two sections in the BIOS to turn RAID on, so make sure you check the manual to ensure it's all on properly.

Thanks guys. :)

Craig, thank you for the advice. I will definately be having my media and documents on a seperate HDD and any of that data that is important will be again backed up on a flash drive. I will also take a look in at the manual.

Would I get faster access to the disks if I buy a RAID Controller or will the motherboards controller be ok?

the motherboard controller will be suffice for single user usage.
If you had multiple users accessing data continually it may end up frying.

Nah, the only way you'll get more performance out of a separate RAID controller is by buying one of those expensive ones. The ICH9R (or whatever you have on that motherboard) will be sufficient :)
