First time Gaming Machine. Not used to these temps....

Ok so i just put together my first high end rig. (Ryzen 9 3900x, RTX 2080 Super.)

I thought i'd test it by taking a relatively basic game (7 Days to Die) and cranking the graphics up to Ultra and i quickly started losing textures which i assume was down to overheating. The case was hot to the touch though aparently i was only at about 75 degrees which i've been told should be fine (it idles in the mid 50's). I'm personally not used to these temps from a PC so dunno if im panicking over nothing.

Im currently only using the Stock AMD Cooler as I wait for a specific aftermarket model (Aircooling) to come back into stock but im also looking at tips for the case itself. Its a Lancool 2 and it has 2 Stock Fan intakes in the front and 1 exhaust on the back. Whats the best setup for this case?

Help Welcome :)

Someone more proficient with AMD will pop in and help but a 3900X is a hot running chip, the Wraith Prism really isn't the best at keeping that cool, could you pop your complete specs down also to take a look at, makes it easier to help with specifics.

Msi X570 Tomahawk
Ryzen 9 3900x
Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super
Corsair Vengeance DDR4 36gb 3600Mhz RAM.
2TB HDD + 500gb M.2 SSD
Lancool 2 case (Stock 120mm Fans, moved so 2 in front, 1 in rear)
Corsair RM750 Gold PSU

Settings are all stock since i've never Overclocked (havent even changed the XMP profiels) and I'm using the Wraith Prism cooler just because the cooler i want (Scythe Fuma 2) is perpetually out of stock. That will be replaced the second i can do so.

Bundled Wraith Prism would be good for half the cores of 3900X.
This would be good for upper Ryzens

Mugen 5 would be actually heavier with more surface area in mid dense fin stack.

Though for best cooling just like with Fuma 2 one question mark is has Scythe changed their Intel optimized convex base?
Intels have mostly toward concavish heatspreader and with monolithic (until recently very small) CPU die only good contact in center has mattered.
AMD again has flattish or even tiny smidge convex from center heatpreaders.
With convex heatsink base that gives good contact only in center, while Zen2's chiplet design has off center heat output.
Hence flat heatsink base would be optimum starting point for Ryzen.
Difference in contact with stock convex heatsink base and straightened base can be quite major:

And you definitely need to improve case cooling.
Nowadays Lian Li uses at best very mediocre stamped meshes half blocking fans, like that rear exhaust.
Hence with that much heat output inside case I would use two exhausts and three intakes.
And something like Arctic P12/P14, which can cope with those airflow restrictions.

Scythe went to the trouble of making sure their mounting bracket is reversible for AMD vs Intel so im hoping they took that into account and i have found sites that rate it as compatible.

I know some coolers like the Cooler Master MA620 has trouble with Intel chips as it was designed with AMD in mind but the Scythe has had nothing but positive reviews.

But yeah i knew some better fans were going to be needed. Which would be better?
2 intake at front, an intake & exhaust on the top and an exhaust at the back
3 Intake at front, exhaust on back and top?

Perfectly fine temps for a 3900X on stock cooler, i see close to 75 degrees load with a 360 AIO.

The CPU will start to throttle at 90 degrees so you are way below that.

Make sure you enable XMP so the memory is at 3600mhz - you should be running 1800mem/1800 infiinty fabric , which will boost performance greatly

As said above, I've got an aftermarket cooler on the way (Scythe FUMA 2) and I still need to pick out some face cans and work out how i want to arrange them. And yeah the XMP thing i have been told before. Not sure what im doing with Bios but ill have a look.

75c is fine
if the case felt hot to touch then you might not be getting much airflow through your case, but also check your gpu temps, textures is normally gpu related so perhaps thats overheating
but either way your case should feel cold, so if you take the case side off and its hot inside look at your fan setup on the case, might be something blocking the airflow

75c on 7 days to die is high as with that cpu you would only be using around 40/50% max and thats on blood moon. usually around 30/40%. so at 100% your cpu would likely be a bit hotter maybe even thermal throttling. use cpu-z's benchmark to stress the cpu to 100% and see what temps you get then. dont forget as your gpu heats the system up the cpu will get a little hotter. so maybe add 5c to cpu-z temps to get a rough idea of gaming temps.

Yeah for the 3900X you definitely need better cooling. The stock cooler doesn't really cut it for these higher-end CPUs. I recommend the NH-U14S for a good somewhat budget air cooler, but if you are more into the AIO side of things then I recommend the NZXT Kraken series X53, X63 or X73 depending on this size you need. I myself have one of these which I put to use yesterday when I assembled my first build. I'm the type of guy who likes a quiet system so at idle the pump and fans are virtually off and I get temps of around 40c then whenever I use the CPU on a demanding piece of software or stress test, the temperature has never exceeded 55c. Also, all the AIOs have a 6-year warranty that also covers all of your PC if it were to randomly leak and damage components (E.g any error that is not caused by the user)

I've already got the Scythe Fuma 2 in place now and the CPU temps have already dropped. I'm now sat at around 60 degrees tops while gaming.

The GPU is still sitting at 75 degrees average and haven't really run a full stress test yet but i have better case fans on the way and yeah, the case is hot to the touch but i know the Lancool Case isnt the best for airflow either. Might look into the mesh front.
