First time OC. Not getting far.

Hey guys. I'll get straight to it.

Intel Core i5 750
Gigabyte P55M-UD2
4GB DDR3 @1333
Lian Li V351b (limiting I know)
Sycthe Mini Ninja with 80mm fan and plenty of case fans.

I am doing my first time OC.

I have turned off turbo for the time being. I cannot seem to get above 3.26Ghz with a base/fsb clock of 163Mhz. I have the Core voltage on auto and it is not going above 1.26v.

When running Prime95 stress test I go up to 70 degree's quite quickly. Surely it must have some more room than this?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
 
Whats the memory speed? You probably need to lower the memory multiplier if you haven't done so already.
 
I believe the memory thing is running at 10.0.

I have the option of 8.0 and 6.0.

Is this what you mean?

I have DDR3 memory that is supposed to run at 1600mhz. I have it running at 1333mhz.
 
It seems than Intel chips heat up very quickly, even moreso when overclocked. You may want to consider Water cooling to reduce temps even more.

I have seen i5s go higher than that, I am sorry that I can't advise you though. I have never overclocked an Intel chip. I know it is similar to AMD, but I don't know the boundaries of them.
 
Yup, thats exactly what i meant, sorry i thought your memory was 1333 from the original post.

Have you set the correct voltage for it to run at 1600? The default voltage on i5 motherboards seems to be 1.5v so it might need a touch more to run at 1600+ speeds, which at an "FSB" of 163 and multi of 10 yours is. I think mine needs 1.65v iirc, but all memory is different so best to check.

Its always a good idea to set voltages anyway rather than rely on "Auto" settings when overclocking.
 
Memory voltage is set to run at 1.66v which is fine, but I dont have an option in my BIOS to set the memory at 1600mhz.

they got to 4.1ghz on a mobo like yours, the one in your sig anyway using these voltages.

Our maximum stable overclock on air-cooling with the Core i5/750 resulted in a 4.1GHz clock speed at a respectable 205MHz Bclk with a variety of 8GB DDR3-2000+ memory kits from G.Skill , Patriot, OCZ, Kingston, and Corsair. The primary voltages settings were 1.375V VCore, 1.37V VTT, 1.80V PLL, and 1.66V VDimm.

So you might want to up the VTT and PLL volts a little, might be worth dropping the memory multi anyway to take it out of the equation.
 
I know have vcore set at 1.25v even though in windows it is only showing as 1.232v.

I have lowered the RAM multiplier to 8.0x so it is now at 1333mhz with the FSB/Base at 166mhz. This gives me a clock speed of 3.33ghz. Maximum temperature is 70 degrees. Is this too hot for a core i5?
 
My mate got 4.0 GHz on his i5 750 on air-cooling. It is possible, but not on every chip.
 
Right. I'm now at 3.6ghz with FSB at 180mhz.

I am getting confusing temperature readings:

Argus Monitor: 73/71/68/68
HWMonitor: 76/74/70/70
CoreTemp: 77/75/72/72

Which one do I go by, and are these too high?

I tend to go with core temp, and they are getting towards the toasty range, imho, personally i like to keep mine to the low 70's max.
 
They have all gone 2 degrees higher since I posted that. Do you think it is a combination of my case/cpu cooler that is limiting me?

I have dropped back to 20x170 = 3.4ghz. The temps have gone from 80c to 76c. Is this ok? I think I am limited by my cooler and my cases air flow. It's got loads of cold air coming in, but no-where for the hot air to go out apart from the PSU, which is getting rather warm, so I think i'll stick at 3.4ghz for now.

i had a full size ninja and didnt think it was very good tbh. im running a i7 920 @3.8 atm and temps are not exceeding 65 with a prolimitech megahalem

76c under load is a bit on the warm side so you could have an airflow issue, sounds like you probably have if the psu fan is the only route for air to flow.

Prove it by running with the side of the case off, if the temps drop significantly then yes you have an airflow issue.
