Before I take the plunge, I thought it best to check some things over.

Coming from an antiquated nokia 6303 (?) on vodafone contract (expired), which is used purely for calls and texts, currently paying £15/m for 300mins and unlimited texts.

2 main reasons for a new phone/contract:
-improved communication through apps/email/social networking, etc...
-camera that is good enough for "normal" use.

The second point is crucial - I'm not much of a photographer and hardly use my camera, unless a special occasion or on holiday, and even then it seems as though phone cameras are now sufficient for casual use. However I can and do like the ability to take a photo of some stunning sunset or something, so even though I rarely take many pictures I'd like to have the potential to do so. It would also be nice to cut down on the bulk of two separate devices which are annoying to carry around, and have phone and camera together in one device.
I doubt I would do much video recording - a dedicated video camera seems better for that purpose.

Right now I'm looking at buying the Nokia Lumia 720 and going for the £10 goodybag on giffgaff (already sent off for the free sim) - looks like that will be going up to 500 mins from 250 on the 12th of this month! :D

I'm quite surprised at the cost of new handsets, even a midrange one like the lumia 720 - ~£250-270 is a lot to fork out on a handset, although it seems as though the overall price with giffgaff sim is cheaper than buying it on 24 month contract with O2.

So, are there any other phones I should be looking at apart from the lumia 720, in that £250-300 price range?
I can't afford to spend much more than that - I can see the lumia 920 or the HTC One have better cameras, but tbh I just can't justify the price given that I will not use all the features.
How about sim deals - anything better than that giffgaff one? Should I just get a contract?

Only other option would be a used handset - any recommendations here?
Thanks. :)

I'd recommend looking at the Nokia 720, as that has excellent camera performance and the social integration within WP is fantastic.

Look at second hand handsets, can get some superb deals lately. If you are open to the idea of that then check out the one XL, one S, GS 3, all have absolutely superb cameras overall.

Check out Motorola RAZR I.

I thought Motorola were one of the worst for Smartphone camera's?

in terms of imaging, Nokia are the best in the mid-range from looking at a glance.

though Sony have some good camera's in the smartphone range as well, so I'd say look at Sony or Nokia in terms of imaging.

Late update - have had more pressing things so phone has not been a priority recently.

I noticed the nokia pureview 808 which looks fantastic although has two problems:
- extremely hard to get hold of from any reputable reseller
- running outdated OS and has been discontinued since last year.

Wish I'd got one of these earlier now.

Then I see that nokia are about to release the updated version of the 808 imminently, although I expect that to be no less than £500...

Got the giffgaff sim sitting here while I make my mind up.
Nexus 4 does look good for a phone, although I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable relying on the camera.
