First time synology

Hi hope this is in the right forum.
Would like some help on this topic completely new to it.
But want something to store a large film collection on and also can be watched on the TV and laptops around the house.


Would this be what I needed also hard drives and anything else?

If this all seems like noob questions then honestly I don't have a clue about this stuff but would like to learn.

Personally I would go for either of these Synology devices as they are the 2014 models, the great thing about the Synology devices are they are super easy to set up and use. Just plug the drives in and allow the device to create a volume and then start adding data to it. They also have a good range of Apps for your smartphone.

Their break down for their coding is as follow.

DS214

DS = Diskstation

As for hardrive choice any of these depending on the size you want would be my preference, I have two 3TB Red drives myself in mirrored mode and they are great.

No necessarily no, if your TV supports DLNA then you should just be able to browse the file structure within the Synology and play most files! (although you may struggle with mkv's etc)

If you need a simple, stand-alone media player I'd recommend the WDTV Live.

the one you quoted works perfect for what you wanted to use it for,i had one and works great for streaming films across to tv and other devices, just place 2x 2gb hard drives in install software and of you go. but this also depends on how much you want to spend.
other you could use is wd my cloud external hard drive these again works great 6tb max
 
I would still go for the newer fast unit! The new DSM (Disk station manager) runs much better on a dual core setup.
