First time triathlon?

I'm doing the Olympic as I wanted the challenge.

Already done all the distances individually since last posting here. Swam 60 X 25m last night in 40mins which was slow and steady. Had to compete in a public pool with people stopping infront of me. Interestingly I found as the lane freed up in my last 20 lengths I was getting more powerful and efficient. Probably from not having to stop and adjust constantly.

Fairly confident I'll be fine. There's over 5 months to train and I've done various other endurance based runs and rides of over 2 hours at a tiring pace.

I'm certainly not going to be competitive to other athletes but we'll see where the training goes.

Get elastic laces for shoes. Wear ear plugs for swimming, they will save you coming out of the water as if you'd drunk a bottle of vodka.

Should swim better with wetsuit, more buoyant, less tiring if technique is lacking.

For Olympic distance you'll need to think more about nutrition vs a sprint so you don't run out of energy on the run. You'll typically want 80-100g of carbs per hour. Nutrition is often something people neglect when increasing distances in triathlons. Always practice on long rides and brick sessions with the powders / gels you plan to use as can take a while for your stomach to get used to them.

Thanks for the tips.
My main goal is completing it. We'll see how competitive I can be as the training progresses.

Did my first brick? Yesterday, with a 10k ride and 5k run. Didn't have any issue with going from one to the other.

Doing stage 2 of Tour de Zwift tomorrow so didn't want to blow my legs before Alpe du Zwift.

Like I said, I need to get in the pool and build up my distance there as I think that's going to be my main challenge.

For brick sessions ideally you want to doing a longer ride (30-40km at least) to simulate fatigue in the legs on the run. As you did, 5km / 20-30 min run is fine after.

Everybody is different, but I have had my best seasons results off a winter with lots of swimming. Its a great way of building a strong base and your bike / run will benefit.

Yeah I'll get there. Establishing some base fitness first before being able to handle longer distances.

Thankfully I seem to have got through the initial hump and into being able to plod along at a steady pace for an extended period of time, so I can start to work on different training approaches to improve speed and conditioning.

On a waiting list to join some advanced swimming lessons.

I've been doing 90% front crawl but I timed my breastroke the other day and I was 15 seconds quicker over 100m...

I'll keep training front crawl as there's obviously bigger gains to be made but I've always found I'm comparatively fast with breastkstroke without much effort.

It sounds like you'll benefit hugely form some lessons, unless you're Adam Peaty? :)

In my 1st tri (in 2011) I needed to throw a few 25m lenghts of breast stroke in (600m swim) so don't worry about having to do breatstroke.

Hopefully I can get onto some training soon. Surprisingly difficult to find places to get lessons.

I'm not bothered about the distance of 1500m doing front crawl. Just want it to be my faster stroke.

Tbh I think it'll come with better core strength, flexibility and conditioning. I think breaststroke is probably just easier for me to do with average technique and fitness.

Full IM AGer here. Been out of the game during COVID though as races kept getting cancelled. Kept the training up though. Got my first standard on 1st May. Quite looking forward to it.
