First VR purchase, Quest 2 or Rift S.

Yeah, I know, but, if £799 is pushing his budget, then he hasn't got many options. I certainly can't see him forking out £1350 and £1999.

Remember this is his first foray into VR. So it's going to be different for him than you.

And I am only recommending these cards if he has the money now and has to buy now. The 1660 Super, 2060/2070 supers will at least allow him to play Flight Sims and use Google Earth. It will allow him to get a good taste of PCVR without going massively over budget. He can always upgrade his GPU later on if he needs/wants to.

If he is in a position to wait, then that's what I am advising him to do. Wait until some normality returns to pricing.

I don't disagree. Just saying £800 is a lot of money to spend just to try Google Earth :p (Yeah, I know a 1660 Super can do a bit more than that, but it's bottom of the barrel for VR really).

Mooching further in to the Systems section of the OCUK site, there are actually some pretty decent deals to be had:

Had a look on a few other sites and the above two builds seem to stack up well. Main problem with the first is there's no SSD; it has a 1TB mechanical hard drive. The second has an SSD & a better processor, but it's over £200 extra.

By the time you add an SSD and Windows 10 to the cheaper configuration you are going to be over £1100. Which is way over his budget. You can buy a PC with a 1660 Super and an SSD with windows 10 for around £700. Neither price is good, but, £400 is still a lot of money.

You are also forgetting something. Kaput probably doesn't have a monitor, so that will have to be added in to the costs. As well as getting the extra bits and pieces for Quest 2, like a more comfortable strap and a USB cable. All that is going to be around £200.

I think I might have found the PC you're referring to. Not a bad price. Could do with another 8GB RAM & an SSD for the OS, so more like £780.

I was struggling to find anything like that under £850 TBH, hence posting the above. Though that's still about a grand in total by the time peripherals have been added. For a PC that'll struggle with a lot of VR stuff.
