Evening all,

Going to be going watch shopping tomorrow, I have always wanted a nice one - it will be my first ever one! It will be worn frequently, as I am starting my first 'proper' job in September. Therefore it will need to be smart. I like the Omega Seamaster range, but they seem a little too expensive sadly. I am utterly clueless about watches, so any general guidance, brands to go for/avoid etc would be much appreciated!

Thanks all :)

Make sure you know the difference between the different movement types - Quartz, Automatic, Solar etc. Other than that just choose something that you think looks good on your wrist. Seiko, Hamilton, Tissot I'd be looking at in that price range, along with others.

Get yourself a nice Seiko for 250-300, then spend the rest on lube and tissues. The lube comes in hand for when you get shafted for the first time. The tissues are to wipe away the tears when you realize how mean the real world is.

Best of luck!

You don't really want a Quartz Seamaster. That kind of defeats the purpose of having a luxury brand watch in the first place.

Nomos are quite a bit above Op's price range also for anything that is worthwhile in their range. They are not dive watches in the traditional styling sense though, which is what Chives is clearly after as he mentioned Seamaster.

Plenty to pick from though as well as cheaper luxury brands such as Longines, Tissot and Hamilton.

My vote would be ones that have already been mentioned. Longines Hydroconquest is an excellent watch. Steinhart do an excellent Ocean series too. Christopher Ward are a bit too overpriced for what's on offer really.

Many thanks all. I went yesterday and tried a few watches on, still not entirely sure on what I would like though. Will have a detailed look at all the suggestions in this thread and do some more research :)
