first year driving...

Seriously, ???

How many miles you drive is entirely up to what you do. If you're only going to drive 5 miles to work probably nto that much. If however you have a liking for the highlands of scotlands and intend to visit every free weekend, you're going to be doing a hell of a lot more.

How long is a piece of string question ?

For reference, average milage of motorists in britain is about 14,000 miles a year iirc

As for insurethebox, check around. Get lots of quotes and see exactly how much cheaper it works out at. Dont just use comparison sites, go to the sites directly and see if the quotes are any cheaper.

Try quotes from people that aren't on comparison sites like Direct Line.

A large portion of the "savings" offered by insurethebox are meaingless. The key seems to revolve around "only paying for the miles you use" but most insuers rarely charge any significant extra premium for say 15,000 miles a year over 6,000 miles a year.

And every other insurer rewards you for being a careful driver, its called your No Claims Bonus !

Not convinced at all.

6,000 miles isn't very many, I usually tell them 10,000. I have only ever had 1 insurance company ask the mileage of the car at the beginning and end of the year, it was on a 4,000 mile policy for a second car.

Just do a quick calculation. If you have a daily commute, work it out for a year, then add say 20% social driving.

can range a lot. My first year driving, i went all the way to wales and back (500miles) and multiple motorracing events. Probably coverd 14k. However my mates first year of driving consisted of going to lakeside a few times... So about 3k.

i see, so getting an insurance that limits me to 6,000 is probs not a good idea

It depends on your expectation. If you do end up going over 6000 then you can just be honest with your insurance and tell them you will be going over it when the time comes and you will just have to pay the extra.

But seriously, asking an internet forum what mileage you are going to do is one of the strangest questions i've ever seen, lol.

I'll have had my first car now for 3 years when April comes and I'm still under 20,000 miles. :D

Apart from driving to Uni and in & out town I don't really do much driving unless it's a special occasion (eg. driving to a hotel somewhere.)

In my 1st year, I wasn't commuting and did less than 2,000 miles. Now I commute 10 miles twice a weekday and do more like 10,000 miles.

My brother doesn't commute and has managed to rack up over 10,000 miles in one year driving around with his boy racer mates. He'd have done more if he didn't loose his license.

In your profile it says you're a student. In which case you might not be using your car so much unless you plan on driving in to uni.

I've been driving 7 years, 6 as a student, and have put 30k miles on my car in that time. So, i'd be well within your 6k yearly limit.

Just an example... As said above everyone is different.
