FISH FIGHT

Discarding perfectly edible fish is an utter disgrace.
I really cant see why they cant introduce a weight quota instead of a species quota.
The problem is the public and its insatiable appetite for a couple of species of fish, which are now becoming endangered because of it.
I think the program should be more about changing the publics attitude about what we should be eating than it is about the way the fish are caught.
Or may be it is exactly that but it's being put forward in a more subliminal way..

Either way, the program should help get SOMETHING done, because as it stands, it's not right, however you look at it.

Well, somebody didn't bother reading the thread.

Of course I read the thread, can one not just have an opinion on the subject without having to directly link it to someones quote?

The OP supplied a link to which I went, I clicked on the "read the letter" link on the home page to read.....

Half of all fish caught in the North Sea are being discarded because of the current quota system imposed by the CFP.

I find that utterly ****ing despicable

I watched Hugh's fish fight the other night and missed yesterday's and today's episodes.

EU quota system is a shambles and discarding of dead fish which are edible is pure wastage.

The campaign proposes NO solution at all.

That knid of pressure gets this result...

Something must be done. This is something, thus we must do this.

I do not for one second believe that half of all fish are dumped. I don't believe it at all.

Of COURSE nobody likes fish being dumped.

But the alternative is worse, and the EU is going to put a new policy in place soon. What else do you want, and what can this campaign achieve?

Don't forget Greenpeace are involved, so it's tainted to start with.

It does offer solutions, there's been studies, even the fishermen want change. The solution, which they said many times is time limited fishing. Greenpeace so far has one small clip where they didn't even mess about like normall and i hate Greenpeace more than anyone.

It's not up to the "campaign" to decide what the rules should be, only to enlighten the public that it is incorrect the way it is.
As I said in my post that you poo poo'd, I think it is necessary for the public to be "re-educated" in what we should be eating, get our attention onto fish that are plentiful in the seas and stop eating Salmon and Cod like it's going out of fashion!

The EU is going to look at it already.

How on earth are Joe Public going to know that is the best solution? Are the braindead masses there just to get riled by by celebrities and pressure groups to press governments into doing something because it seems right and rejecting proper consulation, scientific investigation etc?

Rubbish. The campaign is just to get the public shouting

"What do we want?"
"NOT THIS!
"What do we want?"
"SOMETHING ELSE"
"What do we want?"
"SOMETHING ELSE!"
"Here's something"
"WE WANT THAT"

It takes things down to the lowest common denominator. Pointless G8 protests, protests against banks or student fees or protests against companies being tax efficient.

Politics for people with the mentality of students.

Go back to Tefal's posts at the very start of the thread. They're pretty much the reply to the campaign.

It's not a protest, it also not all to do with EU, there is a lot of education and focus on changing the public.
However it is up for review and as such they need public opinion to actually get European to look at it fully, rather than go for a was option like usual.

1) it's not like the population of those caught fish are dwindling
2) it's hardly going to waste, always bigger fish in the sea.
3) off spur from 2, but the bigger fish leave the live fish to spawn even more fish
4) not toxic? Not infected? No... no issue going back into the water
5) if it's a crime, then so is chucking away last nights mince... In theory.

This isn't an education thing. Adverts and environmental pressure groups never educate, they try to brainwash and browbeat.

It's rabble rousing.

All. Though you would normally be right, that isn't the case here. There huge amonst on how fishing works, and how public can try new things. They also have not stated above fixed alternative and are asking that the review listens to scientists and the industry and find a way to put an end to the pointless waste.

That is not your normal campaign.

saw this last night, was disgusting that those bass fishermen had the chuck away those massive cod, they were caught and dead anyway so it makes no sense that they had to chuck them back, that last one would have fed 10 people!
