So I'm thinking of actually taking advise from you guys this time and not purchase a car solely on my personal tastes on how good I think a car looks.

I'm looking to buy in order of preference either a 4x4, SUV, MPV or an Estate, essentially something to fit my carping tackle in comfortably, has good clearance for dirt paths etc and obviously reliable.

I'm 30, I have 4 years no claims. It will be used mainly at the weekends and the odd day in the week by my Mother, so MPG Ideally above 30 but not too concerned if it's other features outweighs the difference. Parking sensors and Auto/Semi transmission would be a ideal but it would have to be Black.

My budget is 4k, minus 12 months Tax.

Thanks in advanced.:D

Why does it have to be black? Surely the last thing you want is a black car if taking it down dirt paths, it'll always look filthy?

I think a small van would be better. A Vauxhall Combi or whatever they are called. Pop one of those lockable tubes on the roof that tradesmen use for your rods and tons of rear space for a seat box and gear.

I'm the worst owner for washing my car but ok as long as it's not Red, Yellow, Green or a light blue, it would suffice. I only specified black as all my vehicles in the past have been black so just wanted to keep to that theme.

The Combi van is the best idea but the mother said she wouldn't be seen dead in one. I'll look into the Volvo's something that's not crossed my mind.

Maybe my question would have been better if I asked what's best to avoid?

My Mums not well, she's got some leg problem so I'm doing her a favour and buying a second vehicle to help her get about. I did say in my opening post she will be using it a few day in the week to go to work and do shopping. Then I'll be using it for my fishing trips at the weekends. Although I didn't say I already have another vehicle I use to commute myself but it's a Coupe and useless for fishing.

Apologies, I completely missed that.

OK then, so how about a mid-sized estate? Astra or Focus? You could still have the rod tube on the roof, still have tons of boot space, but perhaps more comfortable for your Mum and both available in automatic form if your Mum has problems with her legs.

I would have said P38 Range Rover, until you said reliable (and maybe the mpg bit too). Although mine was good whilst I had it, that may not be the same for all of them. That being said, if all goes according to plan, I will have another by next weekend.

Failing that, something like a VW Sharan or Seat Alhambra. They are both 7 seaters, which basically means big boots. Much bigger than a typical estate. The Touran is VW's smaller 7 seater, and might still be worth a wee look, but wont be as big. Perhaps not quite so unweidly for your mother as a hulking big 4x4 (although my wife took only about 2 drives of our old P38 before she loved it. Took around 4 months for her to get the courage to drive it the first time though).

I would also have said an LPG p38. But that's just because i want to own one regardless of the reliability.

I'm guessing a Discovery would be a bit easier to look after.

A Land Rover of some variant would be lovely.

So what's best to avoid from the ones listed above?

The JLR 4x4s are going to be expensive to maintain and run, so stay clear of those.

Fox or someone else can advise about the BMWs, as I don't know enough to comment.

The Skoda and VW estates are both good choices (we owned a Passat prior to our XC90 and it was perfect for our needs at that time). The Audi might cost slightly more to maintain, but also a good choice.

Focus is a good choice.

CR-V should have typical Japanese reliability, but do a little research there.

Not sure any of that has helped :)

That's some price for the P38 Range Rover. Thats kicking around early L322 money. Low miles for sure, but doubt I'd pay much more than £3k for that one, especially with no nav (not that the nav is particularly worth having on these old motors mind you, but it does help sell the motor). Considered an LPG? I averaged 13.5 mpg in mine, but I thought "to heck with economy". Petrol is more efficient, around 18-20 for me. LPG is half the price "roughly" of diesel, so it equates to around 27-30 mpg on LPG. So similar fuel costs to the diesel.

The 3rd Disco looks nice. At least it's the facelift, which still command the decent money. The pre-facelifts are overpriced IMO.

First A4 avant is a 2.0 non turbo? Pointless engine IMO. Wouldn't bother. Second one with the 2.5 TDI, they aren't great engines (chocolate cams, £4k+ if they go, which is almost inevitable), so again, wouldn't bother.

Focus is gone?

I like a Passat. Any of them seem "alright". Although I would be more tempted to get a good B5.5 with the 1.9 TDI 130 BHP engine like my old one. More efficient, not much slower. Decent all round motor. They are getting on a bit now though.

Something like this though:

Not been a fan of Vauxhall for a few years now, don't know much about them anymore, I wouldn't want to comment.

I like my 330i a little. It's an e46 too, but they are not a big car. Nice enough though. Is that one not expensive for an SE though?

X3 is meh...

A colleague at work has a CR-V and he really likes his. It seems like it may be a decent enough shout, but I'm not sure about them to be honest.

I would be more tempted toward a pickup style vehicle here - a pickup is actually incredibly handy if you are fishing (can hose down the back etc) all you need is a top...
(maybe it's coming from a costal area but they are definitely practical)

or if you fancied something more car like:

depends on where you are going with this thing tbh - but for a fishing vehicle a pickup with truckman would always be my preference (otherwise you eventually get a smell inside, believe me!)

Cheers guys certainly opening my eyes again somewhat. I definitely need to do more research.

@ the_r_sole, tell me about it my Coupe stinks, still smell Pike now... I'll look up a few more of those pick-up types, the Nissan is certainly appealing, It's just a shame about the noisy gearbox.

@ xs2man, I really appreciate your response, Quite educational :) 4K on Cams is not something I want to have to fork out for...

@ George Hincapie, "JLR" ? Is that Land Rover.

I've just found this Audi A4 on AT, http://goo.gl/sSPQxL , Seems too cheap for that model?
