This is very much a starting point, so I guess I'm asking for any and all experience of getting fitted wardrobes ... well, fitted.

I've never had it done before, so I know nothing.

There's no odd shapes to contend with, but I think we want wall-to-wall and floor to ceiling wardrobes taking up an entire end of the room. I might also be interested in 'clever' solutions (such as hanging rails which are at nearly ceiling height, and rotate out of the wardrobe for you to load and unload them).

But I'm very interested to hear recommendations of suppliers, and anywhere that I can get some kind of representative quote without so much faff - I'm struggling to find anywhere you can build a design and generate a quote yourself, they all seem to be based around the business model of forcing you to engage in a dialogue so they can start hassling you into choosing them. (Or maybe I'm being cynical!)

Oh - DIY isn't an option. There are fitted wardrobes already there, so some drywall will have to be ripped out and made good, and that is beyond me!

Lube up. It seems to be a mega mega mega expense whenever folk have mentioned their quotes. Worth a search.

I copped out and boarded in some IKEA PAX and that still cost 2k for just enough space for 2 people, with no coat storage.
 
Its going back a while (over 15 years) but we used a company called sliderobes who seem to be a franchise. We initially got them in to replace some nasty sliding glass things the builders/previous owners had put in but liked what they did so much we ended up doing all 4 bedrooms over the space of 18 months. NOT cheap, but its all good today still so no regrets. They give a 10 year warranty which we never needed to use.

For some rooms we just got the doors done and others we had them do shelving, hanging space etc. You'll have to talk to a sales person, but they weren't hard-sell at all and I think got most of their business from word of mouth.
 
I would look for a local reputable carpenter to do the work rather than a fitted wardrobe company. They will be able to build and fit the units purpose built for your space and needs.

I did the same in our walk in. I hate Ikea stuff but the carcasses are ok if you fix them back to the walls. You can overlap them a bit too to maximise space. We don't have doors on them. Drawers are ok but nothing special and feel they wont last 5 years. Some of the storage solutions are smart though, I like the shallow pull out trays for sunglasses and stuff and the online planning tool I found very good.
 
We did the daughters room year before last.
She decided what she wanted, and we got a local firm to quote. We got two quotes from local bedroom companies. We didn't use any large big brand company as I'm not a fan of contractors being used etc.

The chap we used only lived a few streets away, ran his own company with a shop in town, it was all made to measure and he did a great job....We had to wait 3 months for a slot. And it cost 3k. Soft close, internal draws etc, desk area in the middle with a grained effect 'makeup' draw. Really nice, and maximum storage for all her carp :D

Excellent idea on the glass!
 
Any of you guys that built-in IKEA Pax care to show any pics or guides? We’d quite like to do that in our new loft next to the chimney part of the wall. Seems silly to build anything in as it’s not actually an alcove, but I’d like it to be flush and neat.

This is pre-any fascia or anything, but just simply butted right up against the wall (skirting removed).

 
Every time i've looked at fitted wardrobes they've just been £LOL for what you get i could just never get my head around spending that much for what you get :( i had a couple of people around when we did our house and it was just insane the prices.

I was going to go Ikea PAX as that seemed the best middle ground to me, in the end i cheaped out and just built my own wooden shelving with cheapo B&Q brackets and a big clothes rail between 2 walls probably for about £60 all in, as its for our walk in wardrobe so it's not on show so it didn't end to look amazing just be functional.

That looks excellent, and I am considering getting some quotes from locals for the same reasons. Actually the one you used might not be all that far away from us - could you share their name?
 
If you can fit kitchen cupboards you can fit pre-made wardrobe carcasses and doors. Its the fitting costs that add to the price on this type of thing. Is DIY an option for you?

Yeah sure, it's Shaun at Newbold Fitted Bedrooms, in Chesterfield.
The daughter found a picture of what she liked on Google, showed it to Shaun, and he said yeah can do that, and that was it :) He came round with samples/colours/finishes etc, and brochure of what can be done internally etc, handles and the likes. He was quite honest about what he charges labour etc. for his time. Very happy with him.

Have you tried their online planner? You can add all your shelves and storage solutions to it, it gives you a shopping list that you can just add to your bag and buy it all online. Pretty smart.

Yep I just found that. I didn't realise they were sold to be built in, I thought it was another one of those IKEA hack things that you find on blogs etc. :)
 
As an intermediate between IKEA and full custom carpentry, place near us does vinyl covered doors, cut to size
