Happy Easter all,

I made a similar thread in the motherboard section: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17997521

I have a Noctua NH-U12P cpu cooler since i have lost the nuts needed to take my motherboards heatsinks off would it be possible to fit the CPU cooler with out the large black backplate such as just using something each screw could screw into?

Really need some help as i have been without a pc for 4 days and i'm having withdrawal symptoms :p

I( wouldn't recommend fitting it without a backplate to be honest. The backplate is there to prevent it warping or causing damage to your mobo. It is a large heatsink and weighs a bit. Therefore it is wise to use the backplate.

Well then i have the problem in that i need to find some nuts to screw the motherboard's heat sinks in :(

edit:

Would the motherboards backplate cooler prevent it from warping since it is so big and thick?

My motherboard is a gigabyte P35 DQ6

Here is a picture of the backplate http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/data/articles/2007/2246/dq6_crazy.jpg

I wouldn't bet on it. Try phoning Noctua up to see if you can get some replacement nuts. I tried searching round but I can't find anywhere you can buy them. I'm sure a quick phone call would sort you out.

It's not the nuts for the CPU cooler. It's the nuts to keep the motherboard's heat sinks in place. I have to remove the motherboards copper backplate to install the cpu cooler. But once i remove the backplate the motherboards heatsinks which cool the north and south bridge become loose and will not be effective at cooling.

I have sent gigabyte an email asking if they can send me some nuts but they haven't replied yet. If they are standard screws then maybe i can buy them somewhere :)

Thanks for your reply tho :)

I lost two of my screws - and used generic ones that I chopped with a hacksaw/ It worked fine. I thought that overclockerrs or noctua had forgotten to put them in the box. Then I realsied AFTER I had put the heatsink on that they were hiding in other parts of the kit. It was so strong anyway I never bothered to change back to the original screws. you have to mount this properly or it will be weak. make it STRONG

Went to B&Q, homebase and ******es and non of them have the really small nuts i need. Think my only other option now is to phone gigabyte and hope they can sort me out :(

Or, you could buy NB & SB heatsinks such as the Enzotech Forged Copper Northbridge heatsink - CNB-S1 and corresponding Enzotech CNB-S1L. Not sure if they would fit your mobo though ...

It sounds like by installing your new CPU heatsink you would need to do this anyway?

It should all fit on my motherboard :) just lost the stupid nuts that come with the motherboard :(

I hope gigabyte can help if they can't I'll ring ocuk just on the off chance they can help me :p If all else fails i will buy a new motherboard lol
