Fitting false ceiling above stairs...

This thread made me look at the area above my staircase. It also could be used similarly however I'm not sure it would look very good. Think it would make the hallway/landing look a bit dark.

Yeah me too.

What Simps has done is a clever use of space. But your on the cheap plan is gonna just give you a darker enclosed staircase with no added benefit.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure the point. How ugly can a stairwell be?!

It's more about the cost for me. For less than half the price of redecorating the stairs (I don't have the ladders/skill etc) I can do exactly what I've seen others do. It future-proofs it in that anyone can paint it with no special tools. I'm not averse to paying local people proper money however it becomes an issue if you don't have it and I am one of these who researches and plans things well. e.g. I'd rather put the money towards a fitted wardrobe as it is over a meter deep and such wasted space as you can't reach or adapt it however I know someone whose had it done and the same company quoted me a price and advise much lower than others. And theirs is still going strong 10 years later so I know it is good quality!

I could do what simps has done but with the wall in there it would make it a lot more work and expense. I am thinking about it however as my dad did it but he's not around for advice on how he handled taking the bricks out without the roof collapsing lol. I have an idea and obviously I'd ask first.

When a stairwell isn't decorated for a while the wallpaper flakes ok and it looks grubby and rubbish. To take all the wallpaper off means I'd have the stairs different texture and 'feel' (to the touch) to the landing and the living room. If you paint it light and neutral is actually looks quite bright.

I'm not sure why you would have to take bricks out? You can have the cupboard access from the landing, like a traditional airing cupboard?

tbh i'm not sure how desirable closing in the volume of a stair is to future buyers, just because it makes it easier to paint.
People will wonder why it's been closed in for no gain - the only real gain would be to provide additional storage - if you aren't going to do that then I'd say keep your money and get a roller on a pole!
