Fix for audio stutters in systems with R9s in Crossfire with VSync on its way

Hello everyone,

We just updated the Mantle Known Issue page for the Catalyst 14.2 Beta driver (here is the link: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Mantle-Known-Issues.aspx).

It now elaborates on the support for the 280X:

"Mantle performance for the AMD Radeon™ HD 7000/HD 8000 Series GPUs and AMD Radeon™ R9 280X and R9 270X GPUs will be optimized for BattleField 4™ in future AMD Catalyst™ releases. These products will see limited gains in BattleField 4™ and AMD is currently investigating optimizations for them."

I get a 404 page not found error from that link btw

Excavator APU in 2015 ^^^^ No enthusiast performance CPU's in sight, yet. Vishera looks like its the performance CPU for at least another year.

Limited gains?

Limited gains is not the problem, Gains are fine, good infact, the problem is its using far to much vRam, or there is a memory leak. or both..... i give up trying to explain what the problem is... its as if no body is listing. All we ever get is the same canned response.
What are these optimisations? is there something different about the Hawaii GPU that enables Mantle to work? is it just that it has enough vRam to deal with the extra vRam used? are your optimisations reducing vRam usage / fixing a memory leak? because if it aint that your not fixing the problem. and so the waiting goes on...

In DX i can run Ultra, in Mantle i cant run over Medium because the vRam soon fills up and starts to stutter, why is that?
Will Mantle work for us in BF4 before we are done playing it? and what about Thief?

At Medium Mantle runs like a dream, and it doubles my Min FPS.

Is the 7870 2GB Vram? Not sure but maybe Ultra Textures and MSAA is to much for 2GB?

2GB Tahiti LE, yes. :)

Not in DX, no. i run it at all Ultra, HBAO and low Post AA @ 1080P, most vRam is about 1.7Gb.

At that i get 60+ FPS where the CPU is not the bottleneck, i can run it at that and including 2x MSAA with lower FPS, but still very playable, at 1.9GB vRam at most.

For some reason vRam usage in Mantle starts out as low as DX. but slowly creeps up to make up about 600MB more than DX. at Medium settings thats fine.
Anything more than that and it starts to stutter even long before the vRam is full. it stutters everytime it adds to the vRam, until its full, at which point it turns into a really bad slide show.
Thats why i think higher settings cause a Memory leak, as well as it using 600MB more vRam, or its just a Memory leak.

I get ya. :) I'll after check my vram not something I have check with Mantle.

I know exactly what u mean here.. its like the card isnt deleting used textures to make room for new textures.. this happens to me on bigger maps but not so bad on say Metro or Locker where its almost all indoor play. I can run all High settings with 2xMSAA and average 2.5GB VRAM on my 7950. Even 4xMSAA but if i up the settings to Ultra (even with 2xMSAA) im starting to hit 3GB VRAM which then creates the stutters.

@Warsam71.. any reason why Vsync wont work in borderless windowed mode in BF4? I'd really like this to work so i can have no tearing at all while still being able to stream or record with OBS ;)

Yeah, does your vRam clear on loading a new map / round?

According to the BF4 info (Render.DrawScreenInfo 1) mine doesn't.

You know how in DX it will clear the video memory, in MSI AB when the round ends you can see it clear that 1.5Gb or whatever and then build it back up from 400MB or whatever to whatever.... ever ever :D

Render.DrawScreenInfo 1 does not show vRam usage in DX, but does in Mantle, according to it its not clearing that vRam from the last map, instead it just adds a bit more to it, i have never actually played enough rounds in a row to fill the vRam in this way, but if i did i suspect i know what would happen.

I've not really looked to see if that happens.. will do next time i play. GPU-Z actually works for looking at VRAM etc. I usually have GPU-Z on show on my second monitor while playing.

Interesting tho i'll have to check that next time.

Let me know :)

Let me know :)

You're right Mr Humbug.. just done a test on Mantle and DX where Mantle VRAM didnt go down but DX on map change went down to less than 300MB before loading up the next map.

The VRAM can max out on one map with Mantle on Ultra for me anyway but something is obviously up with the textures. Lets hope they fix this issue soon. I want to run Ultra again :)

Thank god this is going to be fixed. It was driving me potty. Yes I just disabled vsync but really shouldn't have to play with settings to get a playable experience

I knew this 4gb would come in handy. :D Let me tell you even with Mantle using shed loads of vram i have enough to run BF4 at 1440P AAx0 with 150% res scaling (3840 pixels × 2160 ala 4K) and vram usage is around 3.6gb. Playable fps as well. ;)

But ur forgetting that the 7xxx series are not as optimized as the 290's are.

Anyway i just did a round on Metro maxed out Ultra 4xMSAA which lasted 15 minutes. My VRAM topped at 2600MB :)

Sorry to necro this (very old) thread. But I am still having this exact issue. Even on 15.10 drivers. Been annoying me for a few months but I never really looking into it. After lots of effort with latencymon and trawling through xperf logs I found nothing (other than the direct x kernel driver causing crazy amounts of dpc latency). I then found out apparently it was a known problem back with the 290's years ago as there are a couple of threads about it on various forums... I then found this thread saying the problem has been fixed in an old driver release.

I would just like to say I am currently on 15.10 and still have the problem. I am running windows 10, which was an upgrade from windows 8.1, however I then reset the installation (so its was close to a "fresh install" of win 10 as you can get). All GPU drivers are installed by first booting into safe mode, wiping the old drivers, rebooting and then installing the drivers normally.

Disabling v-sync in fullscreen (and thus crossfire) games stops the audio stutters just as previously reported, disabling crossfire fixes the issue regardless of window mode and v sync mode.

My specs are in the sig if you want to know.

I'd also like to resurrect this thread. I'm running a 295x2, and if I enable VSync on CODBLOPS III or Heroes of the Storm I get audio crackles and stutters. If I turn VSync off, the audio corruption disappears. I'm using a dedicated sound card, and I've tested with both dedicated and onboard audio.

Using the latest drivers of course, that released only a few days ago.
