Hi

if you fix your IP on your internal network to say 192.168.1.12 and the router is providing dynamic ips for the rest of the devices - what is to stop 192.168.1.12 being allocated first to another machine then you log on and try and set that IP as your own fixed one ?

just thinking, if I set mine to a high no. (12 isnt bad anyway) say 192.168.1.55 I could be pretty sure that no one would be allocated 192.168.1.55 ?

any networking bods agree with this ?

also, maybe option to fix the ip on every device on the network but that doesn't sound a good idea

this is a home network so experimental use really - portforwarding to 1 pc only

thanks

Hi

its a HG533 Huawei TalkTalk - didnt know you could give a range to DCHP - i'll have a look

just checked (its 1.14 firmware, much faster than 1.13 menu wise)

Basic > LAN > DHCP

DHCP Server
Help
DHCP server: Enable
Start IP address: 192.168.1.2
End IP address: 192.168.1.254

so I could limit the End IP address to say 192.168.1.100 and fix mine as 192.168.1.120 ?

Excellent

Sin Chase - just as I scrolled down the page i see (new to this router) :-

DHCP Option Pool
Device type:
Option60:
Start IP address: *
End IP address: *
DHCP relay: Enable

IP Address Reserve
New Remove Help
Index MAC address: IP address

IP Address Reserve looks good enough for me at the moment

Is this sort of level covered in dummies networking type of books ?

Thanks for your help guys
