Fix it or scrap it+buy another?

Had the MOT done on my civic the other week and the failure list is as long as my arm, have been quoted around £500 to get it sorted maybe more depend on what the fueling problem is (i have been told i can do it cheaper by getting the parts myself etc but i cba's and i trust my mechanic as he's a life long family friend) so i have been thinking... I've found a nice condition 92 plate civic, 12 month MOT and tax with one advisory, lower milage and generally seems to be in much better condition than mine. The owner is a member on one of the civic forums i visit and has had it for 2 years and seems to have not had any trouble with it. She'll take £800 for it and i figure if i brake and scrap mine/sell it (already had some interest in it) then it would work out cheaper to buy another then fix mine.

what do you reckon OcUK?

p.s. The civic i have been looking at doesn't have ABS where as mine does, will this make a massive difference ?

if you trust your mechanic, get him to look at this other one and see what he thinks?

if the owner's had it for two trouble free years and has just got it 12months ticket, why're they selling it? could just be she fancies a change i guess?

will you be out less than the £500 mot cost if you bought the new one? ifso it sounds sensible? :)
 
Thats what im thinking, i can get a tidier car with less miles for what would work out the same price to get mine fixed. Only thing that making me think twice is the one i'm looking at is non-abs compared to mine which is ABS
 
What has it failed on, lots of rot? Which model is the other one? Only bother if the body is mint tbh, these suffer badly from rot. 800 buys better cars than 16 year old Civics.

As for ABS, it's nice to have I guess, but by no means a necessity, I drive like a plank in a car without ABS and i've yet to skid into anything. How often do you trigger the ABS in your existing one?

edit: it really depends what you want. are you just looking for a cheap car for cheap motoring (as is suggested with buying an £800 car, or are you actually interested in cars?
if the former then just buy that car that's for sale

Do you use your ABS a lot? if so then i'd probably go for another car with ABS to be safe.

i have never had ABS and have only locked up a couple of times in a non major way. but it would be a nice safety net to have i gues.

OP: Get ABS unless you drive like a complete granny.
Then still get it.

drama queen much? You don't have to be any kind of driving god to brake hard without ABS :confused:
If it was so dangerous don't you find it odd that numerous manufacturers sell their highest performance models without ABS?

I'm guessing that fire breathing monster in your sig doesn't have ABS either? ;)
 
I can see how it can be useful, to people who can't use a brake pedal properly ;) There are lots of such people out there. Personally I've never found myself in a situation wishing I had ABS though.
 
ABS is excellent, it means if I need to brake I can just brake - the ABS and EBD sort the mess out leaving me to concentrate on more important things like looking at the fit girl on the pavement, changing the radio station, sending text messages or fiddling with my satnav.
 
ABS would have stopped me crashing my car to be fair.

i came sooo close to stopping in time. the ABS will of no doubt released and re applied the brake a lot quicker than my panicking foot did :(
