Hi guys.

Well I've been trying (not very hard) for a couple of years to get back to my old level of fitness and tbh I’ve not got very far.
I'm 5'11" and weigh around 14st 4lbs which is awful really considering two years ago I was about 11.5 stone.

Anyway, I'm looking to join a martial art shortly (probably Wing Chun) and will be playing ice hockey once I get my act together.
I’m also looking at playing some 5 a side once a week and running every few days.
All this is well and good (if it happens) but I need to sort out my diet otherwise I'll end up back to square one.

First thing I need to do is cut my alcohol intake.
Going to go teetotal because at the moment I drink about 250ml of vodka a day during the week and a lot more at the weekend - not good.

My diet is alright (compared to what it has been) but could definitely be improved.

Breakfast: 2 slices of wholemeal bread with flora.
Mid Morning snack: Banana
Lunch: 2 chicken and stuffing sandwiches with wholemeal bread, yoghurt.
Mid After-noon snack: Banana
Tea: Either a ‘Pasta Bake’ (tomatoes, pasta, onions and garlic), ‘Chilli and Jacket Potatoes’ (vegetarian mince, baked beans, tomatoes and chilli powder), ‘Shepherds Pie’ (again vegetarian mince, carrots, onions, gravy and potatoes), ‘Sausage Casserole’ (vegetarian sausage, carrots, potatoes, mushrooms and gravy), ‘Chicken, Beans and Potatoes’, ‘Spaghetti Bolognaise’ (vegetarian mince, tomatoes, onions etc.) or Pizza (takeaway at the weekend).
Evening snack: crisps and vodka :p

Now during the day doesn’t seem too bad but I’m guessing my evening intake, coupled with my lack of activity is not doing me any favours.

Any suggestions are more than welcome!

TIA

Si.

I'm by no means an expert on this kind of stuff but I'd go out on a limb and say that your 250ml of vodka a night ( ) is ruining any other efforts you're putting into your diet during the day.

Like I said, cutting out the alcohol altogether.
Cut out the carbs altogether or lower them?
I tend to eat pasta and other filling things at tea time because it makes me less likely to snack later on.
Would replacing pasta, rice etc with wholeweat varieties be a step in the right direction?
The vegi mince is pretty high in protein. What else would you recommend?

yup changing to wholemeal pasta would be better for you ,but if truth i'd limit the pasta intake anyway, im not up on vegitarian foods ,perhaps theres another veg user in here who can add on what protein foods to eat,at the moment all you seem to eat is pasta and potatos :p .

I'm not actually a vegetarian.
Just tend to eat what my partner eats as she is vegetarian.
If you have any suggestions I'm all ears!

Edit:
What would people recommend cutting my calorie intake to?
Apparantly my maintenance calorie intake will be around 2317 per day.
Would 1500 be too few?

First off, I'm not clued up on this kind of thing but having more of a mix would be better, and i'm not sure what you do for a living so i'm not sure what level of activity do during the day, so how about this?

Breakfast: Cereal, like special K red berries or similar.
Mid Morning snack: Apple/orange or some mellon
Lunch: 1 salad/tuna sandwich with wholemeal bread, orange/banana and a bottle of water.
Tea: Steamed fish (salmon or haddock) with veg, Meat and potato pie with carrots or baked beans, spag boll, home made Pizza (so it's lighter and better for you than pre-made ones) and beans on toast is simple and good for you.
Evening snack: A bowl of cereal would see you thru to the next day, without having to snack.

Hope that helps you.

I've been out and bought some Muesli so I'll give that a try with some milk and fruit for breakfast instead of the toast.
Got the Holland and Barrett Super One multi-vits too so I'll pop one of those a day (as recommended on Gilly's thread recently).

I work a deskjob doing software support so very little activity besides taking the stairs rather than lift and getting the coffees in.

Are my problems mainly on an evening?
Should I change anything else?

Hey, I'm insomnia's girlfriend and the cook of the house.
I am very much motivated to make this work as I think we could both do with being a lot healthier even though I don't show it as I don't really put on weight.

I have been out and bought a whole load of fruit and veg today to go with fish/chicken etc (the veg that is not that fruit!) but was wondering if anyone had any recipe suggestions to make it intresting? If we have to cut down on carbs then I am going to find it hard to think of anything filling to make. I am a fairly competant cook so anything is do-able.

Thanks for all your help so far :)
