A friend has a PC using windows media centre edition on which he's managed to balls the mbr. He doesn't have the media centre disks as it came all pre-installed. He does have an XP Pro disk though. Will the 'fixmbr' at the recovery console be safe to use off the XP Pro disk in this case? Thanks!

The easiest solution is to create a boot disk and type FDISK /MBR at the prompt. Although you suggestion will work as the MCE disk 1 is virtually the same as the XP pro disk.

Yes I've done this on a couple of PC's and it works OK.
