I've got an iron gate that needs rehanging. It's currently just screwed directly to the brick wall but I think it might be better off attached to a wooden batten, or post, which is itself attached to the wall.

Questions are;
1 - what is the best way of attaching the wooden post to the wall?
2 - which is the best way of attaching the gate to the post?

So in the drwaing below, do I use some sort of anchor for the post or will plugs and screws be ok and should the gate screws go through to the wall as per the bottom hinge:

Forget the batten, with an iron gate it will be the weak point. Will rot in time and need more maintentenance. Just use proper wall anchors, if it's brick wall me its sound use some sleeve anchors.

Haven't weighed the gate but it's a full height, over 6'. I have considered anchoring the gate straight to the wall but the hinge is pretty small. On the other hand, a wooden post will need replacing eventually.

i'd be weighing it, dividing it by 6 (assuming three holes per bracket & two brackets), and getting rawl plugs rated to that weight.

Looks like what's in there at the moment is pretty much that, but with rubbish old plugs...

Rawl plugs are weight rated :confused:

You could get away with drilling the holes in the hinges a little bigger by the looks of things. :)

I have a very large, very heavy gate hung off a single wooden post which is attached to the house using 5 large thunderbolts (M12)

Hasn't moved a millimetre.

For reference, that gate is 2.4m x 2m and you can see the top bolt (countersunk) in the image

yer, think i'm going mad - sure I'd bought some with the weight rating on them but it looks like I imagined it! sorry, guess there are so many unknowns & the real limit is down to how well they are fitted and the quality of the material.

Still if its held up with rubbish plugs at the moment and its lasted going up a size or two wouldn't do any harm :)

Even M6 sleeve anchors would be ok for that if you don't have room for M8

If you are using a batten wont you need a lump taking from of the gate?

If you do want to use timber - I would use a hardwood (Oak? but will cost ) keep it of the floor so it dont suck water up or treat the bottom of the post.

You can plan it out so that the hanging points are in the right place fixed on the post and You could bolt them through the post first flush on on the back face for obvious reasons washered (before using epoxy anchor bolts to fix the post to the wall) washered and stick copper grease on so you can get them of in the future. :)
