Fixing skirting boards help!

Thanks. Used gripfill to attach the packers to the wall and then used screws for the skirting. The walls are pretty uneven and was worried gripfill wouldn't hold it well enough.

Always better to fire a few screws in rather than relying on gripfill. I only use gripfill for sticking little pieces on. Plus if you ever want to remove the skirtings to hide wires behind or whatever it'll be easy to find the screws with a magnet and then remove them. Gripfil can end up pulling off large chunks of skim.

Mitre mate is great for sticking the mitres together, its a thick superglue with a spray activator. Gets the joins perfect and dries in seconds.

For old wall and the issue you describe. I use two screws to set the distance from the wall (adjustable), the back of the skirting then rests on the screw heads. Then a third in between and through the board to hold to the wall.

Every skirting fits perfect.

I plaster right down to the floor boards and leave just enough room for expansion.
Then pink grip them on use some bits of wood to push the skirting onto the wall for a few hours.
Unless it's an old house with single brick and no damp proof there is no reason to leave the gap.
