Im asking for some advice here, I currently have a Nikon D40 and with it coming close to christmas my girlfriend is asking what i would like for it. I have said a flash because want to add this to my kit, for portraight and just dark light shots.

I would like a flash that can be used on and off camera, i think its called slave mode? It will be second hand, so would be greatful if people can recommend a couple of flashes.

Cheers.

It depends just how much you expect from the flash when it's off the camera. The D40 can only trigger a slave flash with its built-in flash, not control it like the higher cameras can so you'll have to use manual exposure. Finding a flash that supports iTTL when on the camera and also works as a slave may be expensive. If you don't need the flash more than a few feet from the camera then consider using a connecting cord and a cheap SC-28 copy from the auction site will do the job. You can then add an SB-400 (a bit limiting), SB-600 or something like a Sigma EF 530 ST DG.

SB-600 is a great buy with most of the useful features.

The problem with the SB-400 is that it doesn't come with the automatic off-camera functionalities.
