Seeing as nights are now dark and indoors in general isn't like being outside my next purchase should be a flash

I find myself hardly ever using my inbuilt flash. Too restricted for macro stuff and no ability to bounce the light.
Also non canon flashes aren't to expensive

Was looking at the yongnuo stuff.
Doesn't seem lacking just much cheaper

I'll have a lot to learn with this but winter seems a good time to start!

I think you are looking at it wrong. Winter does not mean more flash. The same principles still applies. It depends what photos you are trying to take, if you are outside doing landscapes, the flash isn't going to do you much good, no matter how big it is.

I mean that now in the evening when I get home there is no light available to go outside and do anything (unfortunately the sky is too light polluted for any creative astro stuff)
So I'd like to try some new flash photography techniques in general

For a first flash i always recommend a TTL unit, whether it be on or off brand. Easier to start with and then add manual flashes later once you master one and want to get more creative :)

Just ordered my first flash :D The Yongnuo 600 EX-RT flashes are just starting to ship now after being announced this time last year >.<

Now I wait!

Yep I need to actually learn what ttl is. I haven't bothered to learn without having the unit

Phal.. How much and where from?

Well I guess they will be 200 usd vs 700!
I'm a tad wary of buying off 3rd party eBay

Actually, I am more an advocate of doing flash manually, since it's dark and you are controlling the light source, so make it how you want it to look the way you want, not let the camera make it how it thinks it wants.

O have they been released now?

Yeah looks like they've started trickling out the factory! I was told they should start shipping on the 24th so they should be on their way over.

I've been checking periodically for them and saw that notice on Flash Havoc so I didn't waste any time :D

Mine came in at $186 from http://stores.ebay.com/sun-sharp2009

I don't normally like buying from Ebay sellers either but that seems to be the done thing with Yongnuo

The advantage of winter is that sunrise is a much more reasonable time to get out than the 3am alarms in summer.

Otherwise winter is as good as anytime to buy a flash and learn to use it.

Seems like prices of upwards of 600 are now being charged!
I only seen one eBay shop with that sub 200usd price
Might bite

Yeah I always planned to learn flash stuff this winter
