Flash to revolutionize the web.. again

I also have a gripe with the word "again" in the title, and the way it has been positioned. Flash didn't revolutionise anything the "first" time round. One can only assume MR.B either has a personal investment with Adobe (employee?) or is a crazed fanatic of Flash and all the pain brought with it :p
IMO it brought consistent video to the web. Before that there was a big patchwork of formats and plugins to worry about.

But yes, I think it's had its day. Apple's dismissal of it annoys people re what they're allowed to do with their own devices, but someone has to take a hard stance against Flash else it'll linger around forever.

Look at it from another point, far more daily activations on android now than iPhone. Android tablets coming out with same price point as iPad with better spec, flash included etc. There is choice now, if you want flash and dont want to be told by apple what you can and cant do with your own property and the choice is clear.

The chaps at Divx were saying how rubbishly inefficient Flash is, they even made their own player for youtube, which worked far better

Flash has been poor recently especially on mobile, but the new 10.2 running on my HTC desire is smooth, they have done a good job with it.

If I wanted to play games, I'd play dedicated games. I use my browser to do exactly that, browse the web and maybe watch the odd video. I don't want to have to download plugins and alsorts of other rubbish the web developer decided to use just so he can make his page load in a certain way.

I really dislike the use of flash and see no purpose for it that current solutions can't already provide, without the extra hassle and possible security holes.

I know this thread has been quiet for a while but i went on holiday :p

The OP was how number 11 is bringing 3d gaming stuff to the net and that it's gonna be revolutionary, the thing is 3d gaming platforms are already available and have been for quite some time so the 'revolution', if there was gonna be one, has already started way before flash 11 (check out unity: http://unity3d.com/gallery/live-demos/index.html#bedroom).

I'm aware of Unity. But the Unity web player has almost no market share. Probably less than 5%. Flash has over 97%. So this is what i meant when i said it will actually revolutionise 3D on the net. Now anyone can view it so it will take off in a big way like video did with Flash.
Unity also annouced that they are supporting Flash 11 soon. So now once you make something with Unity it will work on Android, iOS, 360, PS3 and now Flash.

Even browser developers understand the need for Flash. This is from a Goggle Chrome dev:
It's pretty clear that HTML + JS (+ CSS, + WebGL, +++etc.) is not a replacement for Flash at the moment, due to capabilities, development tool quality, browser distribution, etc.
Frequently the two are not trying to solve the same problems. I think people who play up the "OMG HTML5 is teh Flash killz0r" angle are naive or ignorant.

And he's right. The "OMG HTML5 is teh Flash killz0r" people are the ones who know nothing of what they're talking about, or just iSheep. Apple does not support Flash because Jobs has money invested in competing technology and the H.264 proprietary codec used for HTML5 video. It will also threaten there App Store game sales. Just another measure of control for Apple so Jobs can make even more money off the stupid. And has anyone tried running HTML5 demo animations on Apples own site on a iPad or iPhone? Single digit frames per second + 100% CPU load. If thats not a battery drain i dont know what is.

can't remember where, but I'm sure I read an article that said the biggest wish for ipads was to play flash. Also the biggest reason people choice other platforms is because of flash. It's my pet hate of Apple how they force your hand with their policies, but it's not going to change soon, and sheep still buy them...however this isn't a bash Apple post, more a waiting to see what molehill REALLY brings to the party. Will it be fit girls, coke and vodka? Or a 6 pack of supermarket lager? Time will tell...

The most searched for term on Google for iPhone users is also "Flash Player" :D

BTW funny you mention fit girls because i've actually made a realistic 3D girl with 3DS Max + Unity as a demo of my 3D modelling work... so once Unity support Flash 11 soon i'll be putting that on the net.
