Looking at an independant flash unit and have been searching the bay as i cant afford a new one.

Ive seen many here recommend the canon speedlite 430ex or 580ex however they are outwith my current budget.

i have seen this though Speedlite YONGNUO YN462 for little money and im looking to find out how it compares to the canon's flash units if opn a budget.

Oh for reference im using a canon 400d.

The YN-460/462 are manual flashes - meaning you have to set everything yourself.

The Canon Speedlight flashes utilise E-TTL metering - meaning they will use data that the camera gathers "Through The Lens" and will set the power accordingly.

This is great when you want to use it "on-board" as a better alternative to the pop-up flash.

If you're planning on using it fully off board to the camera, using some kind of wireless trigger system (such as the YN RF-602 or RF-603 system) then a basic manual flash is all you need.

I've got a pair of YN-460's and the RF-602 kit for off-camera work, but I've also now just got myself a Jessops 360AFD for on-camera. This is ~£80 currently, and does E-TTL metering.

The YN-467/YN-468 also does E-TTL.

Thanx for that info

I will look into the other models you have mentioned as i do intend its main use will be as an alternative to the small pop up flash.

Im not ready to look into off camera flash systems yet.

I'm a Nikon shooter but my experiences are still relevant. I went for the Yongnou 467 which is the only Nikon TTL flash they do, it's cheap but has everything it should have (TTL, manual and slave modes, rotates and tilts) and I've taken some pretty good photos using it and bouncing off of walls and ceilings. After a while I wanted to get into off camera and bought another Yongnou, this time the 560 which is a manual flash and some Yongnou wireless receivers and trigger and so far I've got no complaints, as long as you pick up some good rechargeable batteries (Eneloops are what I was recommended) you'll be good to go. I now pack the 467 if I'm possibly going to do flash photography, and the 467 and 560 if I'm using my umbrellas.

I believe for the Canon cameras the 468 is the one most recommended but not having that option I don't know what the differences are.

I believe there are no differences between the 467/468 - just that one is for Nikon, one is for Canon.

I got my Jessops flash because I had a £50 voucher which they accepted, so it made the 360AFD cost me just £30 :)

Worth a look? Jessops Flash on Ebay

I've bought from this seller, very quick delivery and good comms

^ There are differences between the 467 and 468. Can't remember what exactly but there are some. I think the 467 doesn't have a LCD screen.

There are versions of the 468 for both Nikon and Canon.

I have the 468 and it's a brilliant entry level flash. Done everything I've wanted it to do, and really cheap compared to Canon flashes. I've had no problems with it.
