A flash is not designed to light a subject a night usually, because it gives off unnatural light. Think about it, a burst of light from your eye level flashed against an object. All the shadows will be weird and the light temperature won't be as seen. Flash is mostly used ............. in midday sun (yes, i said midday sun) or any harsh sunlight, to remove shadows created by the harsh sun under the chin ... etc

This article covers pretty much everything there is to know about flash photography. There are 3 parts to it and it'll take you a good hour to read it all.

I was taking some photos of breakdancing the other day in a club. I needed to use the flash otherwise I wouldnt have been able to see a thing as it was so dark! Either that or I would just end up with a load of blurry movement as the shutter speed would be a few seconds long! As said above, flash is also used to remove shadows from a subject so I'd say I like my 430EX :)

I found this to be a good read with example photos for using flash to obtain natural looking shots - http://www.planetneil.com/faq/flash-techniques.html

Still absolutely rubbish at using the flash but its coming along slowly!!
