Flexible Data Server

The need for a reasonably large data server has arisen and the most important requirement is cost effective flexibility for rapidly, easily extended storage. With this in mind I have put together the following rig with 1TB from the get-go and capability for another 5TB using 500GB drives (slightly more expensive then the sweet spot 320GB for £/GB but that just wont offer the storage needed in the foreseeable future.)

The part I’m happiest about this rig is the reasonably cheap and seamless from end users point of view for the possibility for rapid extendibility for a further 40 drives using four Norco Ds-1220’s and two 4 port eSATA Pci cards if required.

Here is the spec sheet:

Sourced from elsewhere-
£130 Case: Compucase S411
£77 PSU: X-Power 700
£55 MB: ASUS M2NPV-VM
£65 CPU: AMD AM2 Sempron 3600 Manila Core, 2.0GHz, 256KB Cache, Retail
£74 RAM: 2X 512MB Corsair Value Select, DDR2 PC5300 (667)
£216 HDD: 2X 500 GB Samsung HD501LJ
£190 SATA controller: Highpoint RocketRaid 2320 PCI-E 8Ch Raid5 SATAII Controller

Sourced from OcUK-
£160 Caddies: 2X Icy Dock MB-455SPF 5-Bay Internal SATA Drive Enclosure
£25 Cables: 8X Akasa Serial ATA PSU Converter
2X Akasa "Y" Power Splitter

Any suggestions?

The parts I’m least happy about are the PSU, the CPU and SATA controller.
Does anyone have any different suggestions for something that can fit the criteria for a total below the £1000 i'm at now? lower would be better but I can’t seem to do it.

Any input at all would be welcomed.
