Flight Cancellations

Been toying with the idea of just dropping everythin and leaving soon, things are on the verge of gettin on top of me and I've tried other things and I know that running away from your problems isnt a real solution to them but I'm seeing it more of a chance to get away for a couple of weeks and try and get my head in order.

Anyway, the reason for this thread is, if I go to the airport and just hang around for a while, what are my chances at just grabbing a seat on a flight to anywhere far away on the cheap?

I'm looking for as far away as possible and I think flight cancellations are my best bet, I have some money saved up, not that much but everyone else I know (students) have debts like overdrafts and other things so I have no problem with borrowing some money to pay for it.

Any suggestions for cheap travel are appreciated, thanks.

Depends where you want to go. I'm not sure what the situation is with last-minute cancellations - i.e. whether airlines still give any kind of discount to fill the seat.

However, beware. You might get the rubber glove treatment if you do try. Security people often look upon people who walk up to airline counters and pay cash for the next flight to wherever with great suspicion these days. :(

want to go anywhere far, preferably out of Europe, am aware I'd have to pay but it would be cheaper if they were just trying to make up the numbers wouldnt it?

Makes sense for them to be suspicous but I think I'm not a particularly suspicous looking person and would be prepared to have a search done.

I'm just fed up, had this place to my teeth, stupid ex being too stubborn to even talk to me for more than 5 minutes is my main problem, the world being my second.

I doubt you will get it cheap. Tickets increase in price closer to the time, not the other way.

yeah they do a couple of weeks and even days before the flight but I'm talkin like hours before they're takin off. My mate said he knew someone who used to do it, go and hang around the airport for a few hours then get a cheap flight to somewhere like Poland for a day or 2 and just hang around in the airport for a bit then come back.

I know it doesn't answer your question, but have you thought about talking to someone qualified to handle whatever problems you're having? It may not seem the 'manly' thing to do, but trust me, it's often better than just letting it build up until you can't take it any more (or, as you're thinking of doing here, trying to run away from it).

I personally have never seen it happen or heard of someone who has done it from a reliable source.
I would assume the airlines will be bothered about filling an extra seat due to the paperwork that will probbably be required. Most flights that run nowadays are profitable.

http://www.piac.com.pk/special/standbydiscount.asp This is literally the only time I have ever seen it mentioned.

yeah I have actually, that sounds like a snappy remark but its not becuase I know thats the first place everyone says.

I spoke to pretty much everyone I knew about it and then went to the University's counselling service, I think it helped me cope but not solve the problems, and everytime I come home they just get to me again.

I've been home for about 5 days and I can feel it coming on already, just bored I suppose, I'm tryin to get my old job back and doin exercise but nothin seems to distract me.

Thanks for your help though.

Actually, yes, going on a standby list can sometimes work, but you have to pick a flight that actually needs a standby list in the first place, and then, of course, you've no guarantees of actually going anywhere.

Thats quite good thanks, on there it doenst make it clear whether or not you have to pay to register or leave a deposit or anythin, if I could do that on a few airlines I would really stand a chance I think.

Cheers.

The University counselling service can only do so much, especially if it's not a University problem. To do the job properly, you need to find someone independant. From what little you've said, it sounds like family problems. Maybe relate or similar are worth a try.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do. I'll butt out and let you find your flight if that's what you really want.

Are you trying to "fly away" for good?
Surely there will be complex reasons on the other end regarding visas etc?

no its ok I appreciate any suggestions really. The councelling service are properly qualified and they said most things they deal with arent Uni problems.

Jamoor has just raised a point I didnt think about, visas.

No I dont want to run away for good, just for as long as I can afford which is probably about a week in reality. Runnng away isnt as easy as I thought, wish I could just get on a plane somewhere and feel a bit of relief.

If it's for a week then you'll be ok, but when you return your problems may be worse, whatever they may be.

You may as well book a cheap holiday for a while.

Why leave the country? You can just jump on a plane/train and head somewhere relaxing like the Lake District or Scottish Highlands. Switch your phone off, ignore the news/papers, go for a wander, sorted.

However, please make sure someone knows where you're going. Don't want you turning up on any missing persons lists, please.

really want to get out of the country, but I suppose your idea isnt a bad one, am plannin on tellin people, but not until I'm gone if you know what I mean.

If I cant go anywhere far then I might just buy a 50 quid tent and go somewhere like you said. I dont know how much longer I can stay here, I do have family problems but they're the least of my worries.

Thanks for your help though, its much appreciated.

I don’t think you will find anything by just showing up at the airport, I have done this a couple of time to fly to or from Prague and paid through my nose for the flight (3 times the normal rate)

I suggest looking online for last min deal. My parents are going to mexico tomorrow which only cost £200 for the flight.

You could also try Egypt flights seem to be quite cheap
