Flight checkins

Pretty certain it depends who and what and where. If you've got tickets, I'm pretty sure you'll have been given this information, or at least a contact telephone number?

I'm flying with air france, I booked them through euro disney, and they arrived as an e-mail with a link to Flybe and there is a check-in button, it keeps telling me it is too soon, there's three weeks to go, so I wondered if it was within a week or two or 30 hours or whatever :).

Look at their website as well you may be able to check-in online 24hrs before the flight. Otherwise its first come first served so probably a good hour before they state on the ticket.

Depends on airline. Check In is not always Seat Selection.

On Emirates I can pick a seat the second I pay for the flight. I need to wait 24 hours before I can do online check-in and boarding pass printing though.

Got to get a window seat :) so I'll give them a call and see when it is and do it bang on x time before. My little girl is a bit scared so I sort of promised her she can sit by the window.

Ther's the kicker, if I had booked them myself I could have allocated seats at the time, just thought it would be easier to do them with disney, it seems I was wrong :(

Best you cross your fingers then!

I book my international flights 5 months in advance and all the good seats are mostly taken. Getting good seats at check-in time is going to be a big ask.

Yeah I'll see how it pans out, I will take the advice of calling them and seeing if they can perhaps allocate me a seat now. Thank you all.

Not always.

We flew LHR to KL through Malaysian Airlines. Confirmed the booking on the Tuesday/Wednesday and flew on the Sunday morning.

According to the online seat guru *thing* we got about as good seats as we could, and infact managed to have a row of 3 seats to ourselves on both outbound and return. The plane was full apart from that row.

Doesn't always happen, and was probably total fluke, but you can be just fine.

Totally depends on the airline. Online checkin generally opens 24 hours before but many airlines allow seat selection when you buy the tickets - with Virgin I select my seats months and months before departure.

Many of them are not taken - they are just not available for allocation. Generally about a third of seats are released for selection only at check-in time and will appear unavailable when doing seat selection prior to check in.

You are 99.9% guaranteed not to get one anyway so you'd be bonkers to not check-in online for that reason. Most of the upgrade stories are BS.
I get Economy Plus more often than not, even though I only paid economy.

Checking in early will pretty much guarantee you don't get an upgrade, even to Economy Plus.

yeah upgrades rarely happen these days unless you are a frequent flyer and a gold member or equivalent of their club.

most airlines you can check in 2-24hours before your flight time online, as fox said with virgin you can choose seats in advance of this right after you can view your e-ticket on their site
