If you have had a delayed flight you can actually be compensated, rules below

You can claim up to 600 euro per passenger for a delayed flight.

The rules:

1. Delay must have been 3 hours or more upon arrival at destination
2. Delay must have occurred within the last 6 years (if the case goes to court) but you can claim back to 2005
3. You need to have departed an EU airport (using any airline) or arrived at an EU airport (using an EU headquartered airline)

There are some defenses the airline can bring against a claim called Extraordinary Circumstances outlined as:

Adverse weather conditions (snow, fog etc...)
Natural disasters (volcanos, tornados etc...)
Union action
Terrorism
Security issues / threats
Hidden manufacturing defects
Civil / political unrest

Anything that is in the airlines control that caused a delay, cancellation or re-routing you can claim for (such as staff sickness, general delays, a previous flight being delayed affecting your flight...)

No win no fee firms i used to deal with my flight delay:

Flight Delays: http://www.flightdelays.co.uk/

Flight delays have a link to do it yourself also pointing to MSE:

Money Saving Expert: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/flight-delays

If you have been delayed you could claim a few hundred quid, all the sites linked give step-by-step guide as to how to make a claim, and the NWNF solicitor firms do it all for you after you enter your details, but they do take a service charge of around 29% of your final compensation.

I did this recently (4 months ago from a flight in December last year). You will wait and wait and wait for replies from airlines just for them to say its not their fault. I was thrown from airline to another airline just so they wouldnt pay. In the end i used EU Claim which has a very easy site to get around. They just ask for power of attorney and to send all flight plans etc and you just wait.

The airline i was claiming against blamed it on the weather which euclaims told me they would but still they payed out. EUclaims took 20% but that's better than getting nothing which complaining manually would have got me.

My delay was going from Heathrow to JFK and stuck on the ground for 4-5hrs & missing connection flight.

Indeed Joe the airline does it's best to ignore you if you go direct, whilst some people are successful going direct to the airline most of the time it needs to be litigated by a solicitor which is where Flight Delays was able to help me, as EU claim helped you.

I find resolver useful for this type of thing too, I'm currently in the process of escalating a complaint with Thomson, although it isn't delay related. Martin Lewis endorses it big time, so it gets a thumbs up from me.

Claiming and getting the money is not easy we was fighting a claim for nearly 6 years and still never got paid out and that was using a proper company.

Why is this even in speakers corner? There's nothing to debate, the first post is just information on how to make a claim.

I have a claim going on with EUClaim.co.uk from July14 after they delayed my flight for 44hrs, from Fort Lauderdale to Gatwick.

Yep you heard that right 44hrs. Still waiting on compensation.

I used these and even though the communication was a bit scarce i still got the result.

Good luck.

BTW the airline is Norwegian.

Here's the status of my claim.

Current status of your claim

We have issued proceedings against the airline because they still refuse to pay the financial compensation you are entitled to. A legal procedure can take a long time before it will be resolved. The court must first accept the claim form and formally start the legal procedure. The airline will be allowed time to file a defense after which a hearing date will be scheduled. You will not see any changes in your file for a long time because your case is now with the English courts. We must await the procedure. We will inform you as soon as we receive a verdict in your case.

I used Bott & Co, took around 9 months all in all to get the compensation through for two flights, both with Thomson, one of which went to small claims court. They took 27% if I remember correctly, but was well worth it for not having the hassle of trying to deal with Thomson directly.

We received just over £535 back each, which was just less than 50% of our overall holiday cost.

My parents' experience (US Airways):

We're sorry. Have some food vouchers while we wait. Now we've left, 6 hours late, we will contact you to arrange compensation within a few days. They were offered flight vouchers for US Airways where they should have been offered cash but as they fly regularly they weren't bothered by this.

My friend's experience (Ryanair):

Tough cookie. If you keep complaining that you have been stuck on the plane for 3 hours without any refreshment we will call the police and have you escorted from the plane.

Need to send off an email for mine, on my trip to New York last month I was delayed. Was supposed to fly Dublin - JFK, ended up flying down to Heathrow, stopping overnight, and flying to Newark, ended up about 22 hours later than expected.

Also to add to it, my GF was on holiday in Florida and changed her flight to come up a day early and meet me, so that money she spent was wasted as I didn't get there until a day later when her original flight was for, lol.

These firms do nothing you cannot do yourself.

True but sometimes people are lazy.

The amount of people who use these type of companies to claim back tax of work purchases or to reduce your rates etc.

I've claimed the €250 (usually about £180) 4 times this year for late arrivals, you do not need to engage a third party to claim on your behalf.
Each time I claimed it was simply with the template letter from MSE. The CAA also has one.
Each time the airline paid promptly and without fuss.
I also claimed for onward journey taxi costs when a late arrival meant no trains were running at my destination.

I say good luck with that... No airline is just going to hand you over the money. They're going to fight it tooth and nail.. Hence the need for a legal team to represent you.
